I'm thinking that the majority of gays in the military will continue to stay in the closet. A few troublesome queers will make a big deal about it.  I think it was mostly liberals, of the non-queer type and queers that were never going to join that pushed for this.

Agreed. I thnk the agitators will cause some problems, but most will keep their sexual preferance quiet. It's the agitators I worry about. No doubt the Lame Stream Media will focus on them.
