House Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-Ohio) and incoming Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) on Tuesday called for the dismantling of an exhibit in the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery after they learned that it contains video of a Jesus statue with ants crawling on it, as well as works of art with strongly sexual themes.

Titled "Hide/Seek," the exhibit is slated to run from Oct. 30 to Feb. 13. The conservative website CNS News.com first alerted the two Republican leaders to its content.

Boehner spokesman Kevin Smith said, "Smithsonian officials should either acknowledge the mistake and correct it, or be prepared to face tough scrutiny beginning in January when the new majority in the House moves {in}." He later clarified that Boehner wanted the exhibit "cancelled."

Nazi Censorship of the Arts

"Entartete Kunst" - Degenerate Art

The years 1927-37 were alarming and terrifying for artists in Germany. In 1937 The National Socialist Society for German Culture held an art exhibition in Munich. The Nazis called the exhibit Entartete Kunst, or Degenerate Art. During this time over 22 thousand art-works by more than 200 artists of that time were confiscated. The National Socialist Society for German Culture declared artists of the banned paintings, mostly Expressionists, Cubists, Dadaism, Surrealist, Fauvists, nineteenth-century Impressionist and Post-Impressionist to be insane and morally corrupt.

Particularly reviled were: Edvard Munch, Emile Nolde, Oskar Kokoschka, Ernst Kirchner ( Kirchner was so devastated by his exile to Switzerland that he committed suicide in in 1938.) Wassily Kandinsky, Max Ernst, Otto Dix, Franz Marc, Paul Klee, Klee feared for his life and spent his years cast out in Switzerland. The artist unable to obtain Swiss citizenship because of his status as a degenerate artist.) Pablo Picasso, ,Marc Chagall, Max Beckmann and Vincent van Gogh. The Nazis felt that these artist led young people astray and encouraged corrupt ideas. The upper echelons of the SS occasionally got together for 'art burning' parties. They would drink beer and throw darts at so called degenerate paintings, later burning the paintings in huge art pyre.

The justification for deciding on what could be classified as "degenerate" art was relatively straightforward and spiteful: any painting or sculpture that was in conflict with Hitler's artistic philosophy, was considered to be "Entartete Kunst". Many historians believe Hitler despised the artists of his day because he was never recognized for his own uninspiring paintings. Hitler's favorite artists included Lucas Cranach, Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Dure, Frans Hals, Rembrandt Meindert Hobbema and Quentin Metsys. Hitler felt that these painters upheld wholesome decent standards.

In 1937, Joseph Goebbels, Minister for Propaganda organized a public exhibition of banned art. The exhibition was called "Entartete Kunst," meaning, "Degenerate Art." The purpose of the exhibition was to show the public the stupidity, immorality, and depravity of the modern art movement.

I read what all is in that exhibit. It's not an art exhibit, it's a promotion of homosexuality.

I have watched TV shows that have people discussing some of this modern art shit. They go on and on about the artist this and the artist that, expressing his feelings and his use of bold colors or subdued tones etc., etc.. ....and I'm thinking to myself, man what a load of BS.

The Funny thing is the Netherlands, home of the happpiest people on earth, actually pays stipends to people who get themselves declared artists.  They recieve the stipend as long as they produce a very nebulous something to callart and give it to the government.  Over the years the government has gathered a bunch of large warehouses stuffed to the cielings with this "art" that the government admits now is mostly crap.  When the government tried to put in place a plan to destroy most of it the "artists" howled about the destruction of their art.

Of course, every liberal I have ever met crows about other western countries' governments having a larger national arts endowment than ours.

I appreciate good art.  It doesn't take much.  A respect for the subject, a unique eye, and some experience and talent with the material used are absolute requirements for me to appreciate it. 

I remember a metal welding job somebody had done in downtown Pensacola.  It was just a large pile of pieces of scrap, such as a boat propeller welded together about fifteen feet high and painted garish colors, the owner who commissioned this piece of art had it at the edge of the road beside his metal scrapping business.

The problems with "artists" is they think any ugly abstraction or deliberately provocative presentation is necessarily art.  An experiment in Berkeley, CA confirmed this.  A series of large garish sculptures were placed around the university and city.  After a couple of weeks, all of these pieces of artwork were reduced in one night to piles of scrap.  The local artist community had a fit about the destruction and general disrespect for the arts.  Then the engineering students piped up that they had assembled the sculptures and rigged them to be easy to collapse just to prove that the artists were calling just any ugly thing art.

Jukin, I did my own solitary performance piece on 9/12/2001.  I had two large dogs at the time.  I went out in the backyard and scooped all the poop into a garbage bag, a usual chore.  I had been given some time before, a jewelry piece in the likeness of the Koran.  I took it, and threw it in there with the dog crap.  **** you all, I thought.
