He is a misogynist and anti-feminist. He allows abusers to run Progressives off the site, ALWAYS siding with the Abusers over their prey. He allows the abusers to determine the direction for Democratic Underground. He is so obtuse he doesn't even realize it IS abuse. He has no feminist consciousness at all. He is a Party 'Bot, a Centrist, a DLCer.
This is what one of Allen's former associations has to say about him:

They're about as underground as the sun that brings up the morning dew daisies. They just want people to toe their line. Anyone who is a free thinker is not liked, regardless of how much detail the thinker defends his thoughts with (and with as little effort as the whiny insulting wankers who respond do.)

I choose to side where I do. Nobody forces me unless I deem there's just cause to go along with it.

Since it's about money if I were Skinner I wouldn't change a thing. As broke as many of them say they are they hand over the dough! Have you seen the estimates of the income to the Admins??

But DU is also a cesspool of the worst kind of misogyny, racism and homophobia allowed these days in "polite company," and the main reason is because the owners/administrators like it that way.

You see, there are times when the owners celebrate misogyny, choosing to absolutely wallow in it:

It would be hard to convey the depths of my despair over the issue of sexism at DU -- not to mention shock, and disgust -- as when I first encountered this particular essay by Skinner, the lead administrator/owner of DU, the one with the most public persona, and the one who is almost entirely responsible for setting policy, not to mention tone, for the place. It's an appalling thing, too self-revealing for my taste to start with, but certainly far too misogynist for anyone who consciously considers himself someone on the left. (Maybe he barely is, but it's still "DEMOCRATIC" Underground, not RIGHTWING Underground.)

Skinner goes from bad to worse, and then makes a final pell mell dash for the worst:

First he drools over the cheesecake on the cover of GQ like a 12 year old, and thinks there's some reason to actually include the image as a graphic in his text, thus promoting and validating the common though thoroughly sexist marketing practice of using women's bodies to sell things. Then he exhorts others to join him in what I've fiinally understood as group sport for misogynists: oogling women, relegating them to sex object status, contemplating and sometimes even discussing aloud their relative ****ability, and so forth.

So much for ever getting his acquiescence on banning gratuitously sexist photos on DU, tho I have miraculously gotten moderator(s) to remove sexist images like this in the past. I didn't realize at the time what an achievement those deletions apparently were, given the boss's predilection for them.

He then admits, unabashedly, to being a consumer of pornography (hey! isn't every red-booded male?), then shares his ridiculous and puerile but apparently eternal concern, the concern (obsession?) of nearly all white men: his relative penis size.

Pathetic, puerile, disgusting. And yet, look at how many sycophants lined up to sing his praises -- not a one willing to challenge the sexism, not even any of DU's women. Of course DU's women may have felt pretty much like I did when I read it and considered responding negatively: "What's the point?" He is flaunting his misogyny. No way to reach him -- you can't educate anyone who chooses not to be educated. And this boy vigorously chooses his ignorance and misogyny over fairness and equality. Shame.

Democratic Underground Goes Silent on Sweatshop Shirts

I promised to update you on my effort to get a response from Democratic Underground, the big, big pro-Democratic website that has written articles castigating Republicans for selling shirts from overseas sweatshops, but which itself sells shirts of the same sort on its own webshop.

I haven’t received any response back from David Allen, founder of Democratic Underground. And those questionable shirts (if you must, google “democratic underground cafepress” to find the webshop in question) are still up for sale.

If you would like to write your own message to Mr. Allen encouraging him to respond in this regard, his (already publicly available) e-mail address is skinner@democraticunderground.com.

I’ll keep you informed of the status of Allen’s response, and of the items for sale on the Democratic Underground shop, as time passes on.
