I think the basic difference is that conservatives look to themselves first when something is needed. Secondly, they'll look to friends, family, and their church, if they must. Lastly, they'll resort to government help if they have no other option and are desperate. Meanwhile, when they can, they give to those that need, either money or labor.
Liberals, on the other hand, when in need, will immediately go to Uncle Sam. In fact, they'll go when they don't really need anything, but feel that they have less than others or merely deserve more than they have. They have no problem receiving help from friends or family, either, just so long as gratitude or repayment aren't part of the deal. When they see others with less than themselves, they will demand that Uncle Sam take money "from the rich," (anyone with more than themselves...or anyone besides themselves) and use it to first to support the government, second to support anyone they feel is deserving (but none of those fundie or right-wing types), thirdly any other "good" cause, and way in last place maybe throw a few bucks at some defense of the country...if we have extra...and there seems to be any real cause (like if some of those fundie or right-wing types may be trying to enter the country or vote or something.)
