Rutgers Student Suicide Renews Debate Over Cyberbullying
Published October 01, 2010

The tragic death of a Rutgers University student who killed himself after two classmates allegedly streamed his sexual encounters online has renewed a national debate over cyberbullying, with one member of Congress calling for a law designating it a federal crime.

Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., is looking to reintroduce a bill that in its latest form made cyberbullying a crime punishable by a fine and up to two years in prison. She said in a statement to FoxNews.com Friday that she "will not stop" until schools and prosecutors have the legislative tools to combat the problem.

"My only regret is that ... numerous suicides by young people have become the loudest voice for action. The recent suicides in Texas and at Rutgers University are the latest examples of how serious this bullying can be and the disastrous toll that it takes on young people," Sanchez said. The Texas case involved an eighth-grader who killed himself last week.

I don't care if Tyler Clementi was gay. The issue here is Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei being peeping toms. What a bunch of perverts!  :bird:

The two caused all of it should face some jail time

I agree but also think it is just something stupid enough for a drunken moronic kid in college would do for giggles.  I would be surprised if many sexual encounters now get secretly filmed and displayed.  The fact that the boy was gay shouldn't have anything to do with it.  The fact that he killed himself should be investigated.  It isn't a sure thing that the tape is why he committed suicide.  I wouldn't be surprised if it was the reason but until we know for sure there shouldn't be criminal charges related to anything except the illegal spying.

Obviously he thought being gay was something to be ashamed of, enough so that he couldn't live with himself afterwards.

I think Dharun Ravi is a closeted homosexual. If he did not like his roommate he could of requested to change his roommate.

When I was in college I had 3 roommates Freshman year.  One was just the nastiest lying bitch I have ever met.  She was a horrible attention whore who would cheat, steal, and screw anything with a pulse.  I ignored her for the most part.  She would have a group of guys over into our dorm suite, play terrible music until all hours, and act like a deranged idiot.  She threatened to stab one of my other roommates and I stepped in.  The next thing you know I was pulled into the Dean's office because I was a racist.  The last reason I would have hated the girl was her color and I told her that time and time again.  I told her I didn't care if she was purple she was a bitch.  But then I was labeled a racist because she was pissed, almost thrown out of college with no kind of proof of any racist behavior.  I hate when things get blown out of proportion simply because the person discussed has slapped a label on themselves.

Ya know, there's an easy way to combat this..... turn OFF the freakin' computer!! (Just as we have the "ignore" function on this forum.) This is also why I don't have a web cam or microphone. Computers can be compromised and things turned on without one's permission or knowledge. The .gov uses this tactic all of the time.

You were Michele Obama's roommate?

And you're still alive to talk about it?

Even if this was the reason he committed suicide---this is a damn frickin ridiculous reason to kill yourself! In your early 20s, no less, when, oh my, your life is over. Sheesh! In fact, if he'd gone along with the thing after the fact, he might have become famous for being famous, a la Paris Hilton. He'd have made the talk show circuit (Oprah for sure), been lionized by the "gay community," there'd have been a movie deal, next stop Dancing With the Stars...

So instead of being a famous, slightly embarrassed rich guy he's a famous, very waterlogged dead guy.

I have zero pity for anyone who commits suicide over anything this trivial, especially as young as he was. Terminal brain cancer,  this was not. Death of a child, this was not.

Here's a guy who had a good reason, IMO, to kill himself:

Poor bastard.

and he didn't.

Tyler Clementi targeted by Ravi, prosecution says

Seven months after Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi committed suicide, the prosecution's 15-count indictment against his roommate, Dharun Ravi, includes charges as serious as witness and evidence tampering and bias intimidation, elevating it to a hate crime.
