Bethany Storro, the 28-year-old woman who got national attention by saying she was maimed by a stranger who splashed acid in her face, has admitted to police in Vancouver, Washington, that her story was a hoax. She told them she splashed the acid on herself.

Police, announcing their investigation was closed, said they had spent hundreds of hours looking for a perpetrator and did not speculate on Storro's motive.

"I think it's obvious to everybody here that she's in a fragile mental state," said police Cdr. Marla Shuman at a news conference in Vancouver late today. "I think prosecutors will take that into account."

"She is extremely upset and very remorseful," said Shuman. "In many ways, this just got bigger than she expected."

They should arrest her for making a false statement to officials and fine her what it cost the police dept. for looking for nobody. Kind of like they did the balloon boy's parents

She is nuts - agreed.  But I would not say she's mentally insane.

From her pictures, she's a very pretty girl.  I'd like to know why throwing acid on herself was a good idea.  What the hell was she trying to accomplish?  She's a moron.

I think Bethany Storro likely has histrionic and borderline personality disorder. They are very hard to deal with.

Reminds me of Tokyo Rhodes blaming conservatives for knocking her down outside a bar in NYC when in reality, the drunk bitch fell.

Or that other chick who carved words in her face, and claimed conservatives did it.

Is there any chance this woman is one of those woman that are never satisfied with their looks no matter how beautiful they are.

Perhaps she ran out of money and decided to get a free face lift due to being a victim of a crime.

Even the insane have some kind of motive for extreme actions.
