My credit card was stolen

The fraudulent charges started on the 4th (my birthday).  That bastid's charged or attempted to charge a total of $1500.00.

Same thing happened to my sister last month.  Someone charged $2000 worth of MP3s to her account. 

Her bank returned the money to her account after she explained what had happened.

My very dark skinned neighbor's card was stolen and used at a tanning salon, he emailed them a scan of his driver's license, they retracted the charge very quickly.
My atm card was stolen two years ago, friggin nightmare.

My CC was the one who notified me. They went through the last 5 or so charges. I use it very infrequently and we hadn't made any of the charges. Only two went through before they started declining the charges.

So how much are you liable for?  $50?  And did you pay for your lunch or dinner on a CC?  That's how most get stolen--crooked restaurant/store employees.

It's amazing what info those little handheld credit card readers can obtain from the magnetic strip on a CC. I set up a point of sale system for a golf course and learned then what can be read and transmitted. Whenever I use my debit card at a restaurant, I watch the waitstaff like a hawk until they return it. Stores often get them from copies of the receipt. (That's pretty much gone away nowadays) Some IT folks that work for the stores can obtain that info as it gets held on their servers.

Sorry that happened we had our cc stolen just before a overseas move. Our roomate did it but he also stole our car and $1,000 cash we had for our move. All in all he did $25,000 damages before he was caught

At least they didn't get your back account number and bank routing number like they did to me. Some guy and a woman were writing checks in Colorado using my Information. They totaled up over a grand in checks at different places, The bank caught it before any cash was taken and so far after closing the account they have yet to get any more after two months.

Count me as one who has been targeted for fraud (though my ID has never been stolen -- knock on wood). Credit card companies are pretty vigilant these days, and that's a great thing.

(I still pay off my balance every month. heh.)

Somewhere around here is the story of both of my debit cards getting scanned and scammed within weeks of each other back in Jan. I had to fight to convince Chase I couldn't be charging in both Virginia and Nevada on the same day. On the other hand my other bank Suntrust called me when they detected funny stuff happening.

Oh that sucks.

My aunt's car got broken into a month ago, and they got her purse. She'd run into the post office for probably 30 seconds. She left her (Prada) purse in the car. Anyway, it took them less than 30 minutes to charge $500 at a gas station. Who spends that much at a gas station? That should have been clue #1 for the clerk. Maybe they were in on it. I am guessing they bought a bunch of cigarette cartons and beer. Turned around and sold them. Just my guess. Anyway, they then proceeded to go to the mall and charge another grand. All this within an hour.

It sucks. Sorry. What a wonderful birthday gift.

The lady at the CC company said I won't be liable for any of it. We didn't use the CC at all on my birthday.

Actually about two years ago someone got ahold of my debit card and stared charging all over the place. It was in some state in the north (I can't remember which state). I wasn't liable for any of it. The person at the bank told me that people usually "test" the card with a small fee before they start using it. This person used it at a gas station first.  I didn't have to close my account. They just cancelled my debit card and issued a new one.

Cool! They must like you LOL. I had to call them. I had to show them. THEN I had to defend myself to them. Once I convinced them I couldn't make 2 scanned charges across the country within and hour and a half of each other they were very friendly and cooperative.

A local Shell station had thousands of cards "skimmed" and recorded. Shell corporate sent out a person to investigate the equipment and found no problems and denied liability. Our sheriff's office hired a security specialist from Las Vegas that found the device. Bank of America cancelled every card that had ever been used at that gas station without notice. Card holders were standing in line with cart fulls of groceries to find out that their card no longer worked...
