WESLACO - An internal memo from the Texas Department of Public Safety details a possible cartel threat

CHANNEL 5 NEWS obtain the memo. We haven't been able to confirm the threat, but we thought it was important to tell you about it.

The memo told officers to be more careful on and off the job. It states a flyer was found on a car in Brownsville on May 8. It was written in Spanish. According to the flyer, this weekend would be very violent, because two cartels will be doing battle.

The internal memo states, “The public should remain calm, be cautious, and most notably not wear dark colors.”

The flyer claims cartel members will be wearing dark or black to identify themselves.

Cartels often use banners and flyers as messages to the Mexican government, and other cartels. It’s also their way of gaining public support. But the violence doesn't always materialize.

In the internal DPS memo, officials tell officers the validity of the threat in the flyer is not verified. The agency is advising its officers about the threat as a precaution.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS wanted to know how seriously you should take this information, so we called the Department of Public Safety. A spokeswoman there tells us DPS doesn't discuss internal memos.

The Department of Homeland Security in Washington, D.C. and the governor's office in Austin referred us back to DPS.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS will keep working to find more information. We’ll bring you the very latest developments as soon as they’re available.

According to multiple law enforcement agencies, the Zetas are preparing for an assault on the Reynosa area.  The battle is supposed to begin this weekend.  We're told it will likely last longer.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS contacts at DPS and other law enforcement agencies have confirmed this information is "legitimate and very real."

CHANNEL 5 NEWS sources are tracking reports of the zetas preparing for a counter-assault on the Reynosa area.
We're also monitoring how much of a presence the Mexican military will have in the region this weekend.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS sources say it would be best for you to avoid traveling across the border into Mexico in the near future.  It's a warning echoed by the U.S. consulate and the U.S. State Department.

REYNOSA — A Reynosa city official and a Valle Hermoso mayoral candidate were gunned down in separate incidents Thursday, according to Mexican officials.

Tamaulipas state police discovered the bullet-riddled corpse of Reynosa Public Works Director Roberto Arechandieta Ramos inside a white Chevrolet Cheyenne pickup truck at the intersection of Zaragoza and Nicolas Bravo streets about 4 p.m., said Zunem Sanchez Moreno, a spokesman for Mexico’s attorney general.

Arechandieta — a former law enforcement officer — previously worked as a federal agent with the now-defunct Federal Judicial Police. He was also once a high-ranking Tamaulipas state police officer and a supervisor under Mexico’s Public Safety Ministry.

Earlier on Thursday, authorities in Tamaulipas found the body of National Action Party (PAN) mayoral candidate Jose Mario Guajardo Varela, 54, and his son Luis.

Two unidentified men arrived at the warehouse and asked for the politician, according to forensic reports. When they found him, they brandished two 9mm handguns and fired at him and his son.

Both men died at the scene. Employee Fernando Arturo Treviño Martinez was also injured and was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died, Dario said.

While he hasn’t personally received any threats, Sacramento said PAN’s candidates in Camargo, Mier and Nuevo Guerrero dropped out of the July 4 election due to death threats.

Just hours after Guajardo’s slaying, the Notimex news agency reported that Roberto Carlos Rodriguez, the party’s candidate for state representative in Reynosa, announced his withdrawal from the race.

Plenty of room to bury unruly cartel members?  :-) It's nice that they'll all be so identifiable dressed like that.
