My daughter
« on: April 23, 2010, 09:34:32 AM »
For the last two days my 7 year old has been complaining about her foot hurting after a fall off of the monkey bars at the babysitter. I took her right after her fall to the doctor and they X Rayed her foot they found nothing. When my normally active child has been crying and could not stand without bursting into tears I took her to the emergency room last night. The Doctor that saw her also ordered X Rays and said he couldn't find any breaks. He splinted and wrapped her foot and told me to keep her off her foot. This morning I get a call from the ER seems a orthopedist was in the ER for another case saw her X Ray and had me called she has a hairline fracture in he Metosile Bone(sp?) and so we have a appointment at noon for a cast. I don't know why the orthopedist picked up her X Ray today but very very grateful maybe now she will start to feel some relief. Leg cast is going to be hard with walking and carrying her up the two flights of stairs our house has but at least it wont be all summer just for 6 weeks

Hope she's feeling better soon.

He may put her in a walking cast, in a couple of weeks, that will help with the stairs....

Thank you both for you good wishes. I hope he does because although she only weighs 40 pounds carrying that up the stairs is heavy although Miss Independent wants to do everything on her own insists she doesn't want help with anything

N, that will not do. She needs to take this opportunity to lie back and bark orders and be a really annoying brat.  :p It's the opportunity of a lifetime.

She is the sweetest child although clumsy she had a broken arm last summer. I try and do things for her tell her to rest with her leg propped up she insists on doing everything by herself. I am just glad this cast will be off her leg so she can swim this year.

It's hard for a 7 year old who's full of energy (I'm sure!) to take it easy, LL.  Whereas, my 14 year old would have NO problem laying on the couch and barking orders -- he does that now but we ignore him!  :-)  Glad to hear she won't have to wear the cast during the summer, though. That would be a total bummer for her!

I agree guess it is a great thing my dad works at the ER that we took her to I think he kind of helped put the records in the orthopedists hands. We are getting ready to go in a few minutes to get the cast we were supposed to go in at noon but the doctor called and changed it to one so we are getting ready to head out the door. Will send a update when we get back. I did promise ice cream on the way home so we may be a while  :-)

Same thing as what happened to my broken sternum that the docs never found....it heals crooked.  :bawl:

The only way to fix a broken bone that doesn't heal in line, is to have surgery to rebreak it and set it properly.

From what I know from others who have broken metatarsils in their feet....they are difficult to detect, easily rebroken if not properly taken care of to begin with and allowed to heal properly. The people I know that have problems, have been adults who did not wait long enough for the bone to properly heal before strenuous activity. One went out and played basketball as soon as the cast was off, rebroke it, and ended up having to get a bone graft for his stupidity. He let it heal properly and followed the doctor's instructions the second time... :whatever:

Sorry to hear about your daughter. At least a Doctor actually found the problem after review. X-Rays aren't that difficult to read. Just another case of a Doctor not doing their job and one that was. Right now, I'm so damned angry with Doctors that I could just piss on them all. Arrogant, over-educated, Government sanctioned drug pushers is all they seem to be to me any more.

It would have taken longer to heal and there would have been an increased risk of increasing the size of the fracture.

Hairline fractures can be pretty hard to spot according to a few Drs I spoke to when my kids were little.

I developed stress fractures in both shins when I was in the Army (hurt like hell).  Nothing showed up on the X-rays...  Took a nuclear bone scan to detect them.

Hope your daughter heals up quickly.  ER doctors miss a lot of hairline fractures...sounds like this one didn't wait for a radiologist to read it.  Glad the ortho picked it up.

Just a quick update cast is on had to do it twice the first time before it set she wanted to feel it so she touched the wet plaster. They got it off and I held her hands to avoid that happening again. Now she is sporting a neon pink cast and has collected autographs from family and her friends across the street. Had her ice cream with extra sprinkles and hot fudge :-)

I like caramel, myself.

I did a similar thing when I was 13.  Had a walking cast.  My right leg grew a bit to make up for the fact that the walking cast was on the left leg.  It took a while for the left leg, once the cast was off, to catch up.

Glad that Dr caught it!

And casts aren't so bad...I still managed to ride my horse when I had one as a kid!
