My cat is lost
« on: April 21, 2010, 06:17:44 PM »
I don't know what to do.  I have an indoor cat, but her litter box is in the garage, and that's where she does her business.  I usually leave the garage open to let it vent out, but I have a pet gate across it and she always "knew" never to jump the gate or leave the garage.  Well, I think the cleaning crew, moved the gate when they left on Tuesday and she walked out.

This was bad timing, as I was leaving for Vegas at 4:30am the next morning.   I had my father leave food outside of the garage for the entire week, and it gets eaten...He's stayed there for a few mornings for long periods of time, and never saw her.

Tonight, I'm going to leave flyers around the community...but I'm upset about this.  She's not declawed, but she's probably scared to death out there.   Something is eating my food that I leave out, but it could be a stray.  I don't know what else to do...it's been a week, and no sight of my kitty. :(  Can they be away this long and still come back?

Awww that stinks Hawkgirl.  I would be upset if one of our dogs was lost too.

Not to be a downer but we had a manx cat once.  We lived in Lake Havasu City, AZ and it got out once....never came back (she wasn't declawed).  My husband found her collar about a week later.  He thinks a coyote got her.

Ugh...we don't have coyote's but we have racoons...she is probably hiding somewhere, terrified.  I just read an article that said most cats are about at night, when it is quiet....maybe I'll see her tonight.

Hey HG....I'm so sorry...but take heart.....one of mine walked out on Christmas Eve when someone left the screen door of the porch ajar.

It poured rain that night and got really cold. We put out a bowl of food and one of water. And left the screen door open just a bit so that she could get in if she came back. I even put a pile of pool towels on the floor just in case, so she could crawl into something and kind of warm up.

It rained several more days....I was a mess because ours don't have front claws and I was convinced she was dead.

On New Year's morning, M came in early and told me to wake up....he had Jazzy in his arms. She was sitting on the porch by the inside door when he got up that morning!! Too bad she couldn't talk and tell us where she had been!!! We have raccoons, hawks, owls, and red fox and I was positive something had gotten to her.

Leave the food just inside the garage with the door open during the night if you can, and maybe she will come back if she can get in.
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

So leave the garage open just a bit so she could sneak in?  with a can of cat food open?

You'd have more replies if you had used the other word for cat. :)

One of Franks cats was gone for weeks in tall snow conditions and came back. Then again it wasn't a house cat but a wisened old cat that knew how to handle itself, so that really doesn't help at all, does it?

Actually, just last year, I had a weeping little 7 year oldd girl come to my house and ask if I'd seen her fluffy white cat, which she informed me was an indoor cat, and I told her no...but I told her that I bet her cat will come back.  A few weeks later, I ran into her and asked about her cat, and she said it came back a week later...so I'm going to hope for the same.

Yes, and put some water out there too. Mine only eat dry kibble, so that was what I used. It was too cold to have the inside door to the porch open, so the other cats weren't out there to eat the food. I don't think she came back at all during that week, as the food was only missing a little bit....a hungry chipmunk got it I think.

She was thinner, but seemed ok and she was clean too....it was really weird. Almost like she'd been in someone's house, and they saw the post I put up at the subdivision mailboxes, and let her go. Ever since she's been home, she's been extremely "clingy". Wants up on my lap whenever I'm sitting down (makes it tough to type  :-) ) and wants lots of attention.

So last night I put a can of food out, when I looked 30 minutes later, this little white kitten was eating it...it must have been no more than 8 weeks old....The garage door opening startled it, and it ran away....So evidently, it wasn't my cat eating the food.

Today, I received a phonecall from someone in the community claiming to have seen my cat...but when he tried to approach her, she ran.  He said it was a small, multi-colored cat...but didn't know for sure if it was a calico...I'll take it as good news and believe she is still in the neighborhood..

Tonight, I'll leave the garage slightly opened again....and wish for the best...

So last night as I'm driving home, I see a dead cat at the intersection to my community...my heart sank...I get a closer look and it's not her....looks nothing like her...

Today, I get a phonecall from 2 residents in the community leaving voicemails telling me they saw my dead cat at the intersection...wtf??  Did they not look at the photo I left on flyer....Sigh......

She is still out there....

There is a certain subset of people who love to be the first to deliver bad news.  They think they are performing a duty no one else will, plus it sort of immortalizes them (in their eyes).  Don't be too hard on them.  They mean well, in a twisted selfish way.
