Chefs Call Proposed New York Salt Ban 'Absurd'

Some New York City chefs and restaurant owners are taking aim at a bill introduced in the New York Legislature that, if passed, would ban the use of salt in restaurant cooking.

"No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises," the bill, A. 10129 , states in part.

The legislation, which Assemblyman Felix Ortiz , D-Brooklyn, introduced on March 5, would fine restaurants $1,000 for each violation.

Ortiz has said the salt ban would allow restaurant patrons to decide how salty they want their meals to be.

:censored: idiots. Sometimes salt is needed during the cooking process to bring the flavor out.  OTOH, McDonalds and Burger King could use less salt on their fries.

My guess is that Ortiz wasn't able to browbeat his favorite restaurant into giving him a free meal when the bill arrived and wants to punish the entire state for it.  Maybe the person cooking his meal didn't arrange the rosemary garnish on his plate to his liking.  Or Ortiz could just be a hopeless idiot.

Who would want to eat a meal prepared completely without salt?   :mental:  Sure, there are plenty of places, especially fast food places, that use to much, but it really is essential for flavor.  Heck, most bread uses salt.

Thinking back to the old B&W movie version of Les Miserables, wasn't the government's prohibitive tax on salt one of the principal grievances of the downtrodden peasants?

FDA plans to limit amount of salt allowed in processed foods

The Food and Drug Administration is planning an unprecedented effort to gradually reduce the salt consumed each day by Americans, saying that less sodium in everything from soup to nuts would prevent thousands of deaths from hypertension and heart disease. The initiative, to be launched this year, would eventually lead to the first legal limits on the amount of salt allowed in food products.

Officials have not determined the salt limits. In a complicated undertaking, the FDA would analyze the salt in spaghetti sauces, breads and thousands of other products that make up the $600 billion food and beverage market, sources said. Working with food manufacturers, the government would set limits for salt in these categories, designed to gradually ratchet down sodium consumption. The changes would be calibrated so that consumers barely notice the modification.
