6. Did you notice how quickly Williams played the victim card?
   He was on BillO's show last night moaning and whining about how unfair NPR is. It's the War On Williams! I heard him being defended (on NPR) by Gingrich, Huckabee, and of course $arah - all of whom work for Fox "News"!

Williams should thank NPR for allowing him to play the familiar right-wing role of poor, pathetic, helpless victim. This seems to be the one thing that all conservatives do and that always works with their base, though I'm not really sure why. What is so appealing about a bunch of squalling crybabies screeching "it's not fair!" like they were schoolchildren at recess?

I will never, ever understand conservatives.

 GM is hiring in line workers in Kokomo for $14.00 an hour, half of the normal wage. This is the new reality and there is no point arguing about it or demanding jobs to come back. Between technology and globalism, they are not coming back. For those of us not highly skilled in something brainiac, we're screwed.

Texas seems to me a model for the rest of the US. Strong economic growth with low taxation   
   
all brought about by true bipartisanship and a fairly weak executive role. They're certainly in much better shape than CA or NY - both of whom seem headed for bailouts by the US-

And they reassess your home every year in TX so they can gouge you for more taxes if the value increases. Sometimes people are taxed right out of their homes.

In CA your taxes stay the same as when you bought the home and they only reassess when improvements are made.

Even with double the property taxes we are also required to buy a boatload of school supplies for our kids every year. In CA school supplies were provided by the schools.


When I moved to TX from CA I thought it was great that there was no state tax. But I pay more in property taxes here than I would pay for state tax in CA.

If I make $5,000,000/year in CA and live in a $2,000,000 house how much in income/property tax would I pay?

If I make $5,000,000/year in TX and live in a $2,000,000 house much in property tax would I pay?

Now, it doesn't matter what that number is.  Really.  Because I can earn ALL I WANT in Texas and not pay a single dime in state income tax.  I can then choose to live in a hovel and save $$$$.  It is my choice.  Not the states.

Just my take on it though.

Seriously, what is a parent of young children thinking when they voluntarily decide to sign up for a job that will take them away on dangerous foreign missions while their families are left behind to spend every day worrying about their absent loved one?

And what are we as a society thinking when we make an effort to target for recruitment people who are parents of young children for service in our unending stream of aggressive occupations and shooting wars?

I don't know what others call it when someone leaves their children to worry every hour of every day about whether their parent will survive the day, but I know what I call it: it's a form of child abuse.

38. Either you forgot your sarcasm thingy or you need a math tudor.  
 If you are earning a 30-80 thousand dollar annual income and pay a marginal income tax rate of 25%, your $4000.00 monthly mortgage payment to the bank nets you $1000 per month in tax savings....an amount someone has to make up to keep those bombs falling. That bank wouldn't even consider giving you that loan if your income wasn't 3.5 times that $4000/mo payment. I believe most home buyers are buying houses which cost enough to rely on the deduction to justify the loan. If that isn't socialism, I don't know what is.  

And this after a thread where they were extolling the wonderfulness of public education, and how successful businessmen could never have been successful without those well-trained students to become employees.
