How would you like someone like that plotting an azimuth for your fire team...or adjusting elevation of your fire support?

Sarge--as a recruiter, do you know how many kids one has to test just to get enough to cut a 31 on the ASVAB, let alone be an UMG?

And then you have to throw in the whole legal/illegal citizenship, high school grad, non-felon bit, to say nothing of getting past the med deck at MEPS...

I've heard the stories.  Say how much the standards had been lowered between the first and second stint on active duty as well.

Actually, they went up.  We had a guy in my boot camp company with an AFQT of 14--I shit you not.

At one point, when I came in (1984), they let up to 10 percent Cat IV--that is, 10-30 on the ASVAB, as long as they were 12L's (no GED's or adult school).  Some services were up to 20 percent Cat IV until 1990.

Nowadays, it's 35 QT for the Navy (was 31 when I was in recruiting), 50 for the Air Force, 31 for the Army, 32 for the Marines, and 45 for the Coast Guard.

I don't recall what my overall QT score was when I joined in 84.  But I recall my GT score was 125 then 127 when I re-enlisted after a 10 month break in service.  I also recall that my recruiter told me that my QT was high enough that I qualified for just about every MOS the Army had to offer.  But I wanted a tech job and the GT was the only score I really cared about enough to remember.

GT?  You Army doggies do EVERYTHING all effed up.  Line scores, boys--that's where the money is!  In fact, if I go digging through my stuff, I might still be able to find the stuff out of my service record they gave me, including ASVAB and line scores.

99 ASVAB, 66 on the NFQT.

I don't remember my ASVAB score, but did get a 71 on the NFQT.

Nice!  But here's the bragging point NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY, can take away from me:

S-15 hours all the way through Power School.  Hell, I even got out at 4 on dayshift Fridays at prototype.

I was on mandatory hours for a few weeks, that sucked.

ROFL--imagine me, running into my Section Advisor at some bar on Corrine Drive (can't even remember name now) who, after buying me a beer, asked me why I wasn't spending 25-30 hours a week there and bringing my average up.

As I recall, I told him what I was thinking.  He was not pleased.  Something about I wasn't about to burn myself out to increase my GPA by 0.1 or something like that and that my GPA was fine, thanks very much.
