GREENSBORO -- More than 70 manhole covers have gone missing around Greensboro recently.

Storm water maintenance supervisor Tim Elmore says covers have been stolen before but usually just a few at a time, most likely for a teenage prank.

"Over the 28 years that I've been here, I've never seen this many being gone at one time," he commented.

Elmore thinks they are being sold to scrap metal companies.

"I mean the price of scrap metal has gone up. We've seen it increase just like the price of everything else so we feel pretty confident that they're probably being sold," he explained. <snip>

Are we to understand that otherwise upstanding PTA members are now so hopeless in this * economy that they have taken to stealing manhole covers in order to feed their children?  Are we to be lead to think these manhole covers would be stolen even if scrape metal prices weren't through the roof right now?

I get dizzy trying to see life through DUmmie glasses.

Manhole covers weigh about 100lbs.

Anyone know what the recycle price is for cast iron ?

I check the net and one site said 55$ a Ton

I cant see people going out and stealing 20 manhole covers,
tranporting them to a scrapyard for 55 bucks.

I know copper is up.  Stealing copper is an ongoing problem in the building industry.

I have an 8x4 copper sheet in my garage.  It weighs 110lbs.  It's what I play to retire on.   :lmao:

If one steals a manhole cover to sell for scrap isn't it highly likely the scrap dealer will be highly suspicious that he is dealing with stolen property?

I don't know, maybe recycling manhole covers is more common than I suspect, but I would think such things would come from city officials.  I suppose they could come via a contraster, though.  I just seems like someone trying to recycle a manhole cover would raise some red flags.
