I helped install and activate the SONET for our headend telephony in Waite Park, MN. I grew it from an OC-3 to an OC-12. I performed all of the cross connects, DS-1 testing, etc. Of course, it was all Nortel equipment.
I've worked some with the Nortel equipment many years ago. But the Alcatel product line is a beast of an entirely different color. To be honest their equipment is a PITA compared to other products I've used.
Part of the problem is that my company's network topology. They put together several large multi-ring networks before they had a firm grasp on how UPSR is supposed to work. It doesn't help that the current Alcatel software isn't capable of making Dual Ring interconnects, which makes it rather difficult to close rings that have aggregation nodes or hub sites that straddle more than one ring.
