I put up my outside Christmas decorations today...
As an atheist, I still put up decorations for the holiday. There's no Jesus there, but the holiday is as much a secular one as a religious one. And I don't stint on the decor. There's an 8' Santa inflatable out there, along with another inflatable Santa in a sleigh pulled by two pink flamingos. It's all as tacky as can be.

This year, I've gone retro on the house lights. I put a string of big old-fashioned 7.5 watt light neatly across the roof line. 50 lights. Let's see, that's 375 watts of power. I'll run them about four hours a night and pay the electric bill.

The tree goes up on Friday, complete with 700 flashing lights and decorations accumulated in 18 years of marriage to my wife, along with a few here and there from before that for both of us. Right smack dab in the center of the living room picture window on our old 50's rambler.

It's Christmas, or whatever Winter holiday I feel like celebraing. It's presents and good food and gatherings of friends and family and damn anyone who objects to my display. Usually, there's only a couple of houses on our block with tacky, garish outside displays. More's the pity. The kids on the block love our house.

So, Merry Christmas to all DUers. Celebrate as you will. Or Happy Hannukah or Kwanza or Festivus, or Solstice. Whatever. It's all the same Winter holiday, after all. Enjoy!

1. Same here....
Atheist through and through, as is my wife. But I grew up having fond memories of celebrating Christmas (devoutly catholic family) and it's one of the traditions I have chosen to keep as I got older and have kids myself and we decorate fairly heavily, although in our case more inside than outside.

Happy Holidays!

3. Christmas decorations are pretty much about Paganism.
My wife likes crèches, so we have a few of those inside the house.

5. Well, what I'd really like to find is an inflatable of
Buddy Christ. I'd pay whatever it cost to put that up in the yard.

4. I really like this line of your post - "It's Christmas, or whatever Winter
holiday I feel like celebraing. It's presents and good food and gatherings of friends and family... '

10. Happy Pagan Holidays to you too, MineralMan!
I'll have my decorated Tree of Life up soon too.

11. Me too!
Nice warm (for November at least) day here in Minnesota, made setting up the lights an easy chore. Love everything about the Solstice - just strip off all the junk the Christians bolted on, and you've got one hell of a holiday.

16. As an Agnostic/Atheist, it's not a "holy" day for me, but
I do enjoy the light displays. Probably the best part about it...

You know, the spirit of the Christmas season apparently doesn't inspire the generosity of the primitives.

There's only four primitives at that bonfire who donated to Skins's island.

Even the primitive who lit the bonfire did NOT donate.

Tough race for the DUmbasses as to last place: Christmas spirit or tolerance.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

And they always laugh when Christians talk about the assault on the holiday.  Wonder where those stupid Christians could ever get a notion like that ....

No, that's Kwanzaa that you are thinking of. Festivus was a fictional TV holiday.

I think that comes after Feats Of Strength. By the way, it's been worth the HBO price the past few weeks to watch the Seinfeld people on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
