Former Manson cult member Atkins dies in U.S. prison
« on: September 25, 2009, 11:43:37 AM »
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Susan Atkins, one of the leading members of Charles Manson's notorious violent cult who carried out brutal murders at his behest in 1969, has died in a California prison, her husband said on Friday. She was 61.

Atkins, imprisoned since 1971 for her part in eight Manson-related murders, had been suffering from a brain tumor. Earlier this month, state corrections officials rejected her request to be freed so she would not have to die in prison.

"Susan passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and loved ones and the incredible staff at the Skilled Nursing Facility at the Central California Women's Facility," her husband, James Whitehouse, said by e-mail.

Passed away peacfully surrounded by family and friends...to bad Sharon Tate did not get that in her final moments on this earth...she died begging for the life of her unborn child. I hope Sharon is standing at the gates.

Yeah, I was thinking she shoulda taken the ride on "Ol' Sparky" back in 1972, if it weren't for a buncha SCOTUS limp-dicks.

Well that was about 30 some odd years too late.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Nope--back in the initial days of capital punishment, hanging was the method, and went to gas back in the 1930's.  Even after the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1978, gas was still the method of execution until 1993, when inmates were given the choice of gas or lethal injection.  Lethal injection was declared cruel and unusual in 1994.

However, the death chamber at San Quentin is still the gas chamber.

Probably true.  For her case though, if I were Emperor of California back then, I would have borrowed "Ol' Sparky" from Florida just for the occasion.  This bitch needed to know a small fraction of the damage she inflicted.

Of course, if I were Emperor of California back then, I'd have personally shot Charlie like a rabid dog; in the back of the head, right there in front of her, just before the switch was thrown.  I figure the look in her eyes as she watched her messiah go down might be a small recompense to the families of those she killed.

No sympathy, no loss to society, 40 years to late, and not near painful enough. Hell has a new resident for sure.

This article suggests she may have found salvation while in prison. We can only hope this is true.
Only God can transform a monster and save a soul.
Only God can see the sincerity in her heart.
Quote
Atkins, who confessed from the witness stand during her trial, had apologized for her acts numerous times over the years. But 40 years after the murders, she learned that few had forgotten or forgiven what she and other members of the cult had done.
This is from the 2nd page of the story.
Quote
The matronly, gray-haired Atkins who appeared before a parole board in 2000 cut a far different figure than that of the cocky young defendant some 30 years earlier.

"I don't have to just make amends to the victims and families," she said softly. "I have to make amends to society. I sinned against God and everything this country stands for." She said she had found redemption in Christianity.

The last words she spoke in public at the September hearing were to say in unison with her husband: "My God is an amazing God."
Snatching souls from the gates of hell. I hope she truly found redemption before she died.

....blah, blah, blah, no one gives a...."her husband, James Whitehouse, said by e-mail.

Wait... she was actually married for the 30+ years she's been in prison?  Can we extend her prison sentence to him?  There's something seriously wrong there.... :o
