This apparently won't sit well with some in Massachusetts.
Not that it matters.
But apparently some significant mind-shapers think Michael Dukakis should have gotten it, based upon his conduct since leaving the statehouse almost twenty years ago, retiring into obscurity and humility.
They just may be right.
But the Kennedyites were all for this Kirk guy, their man, who knows more people in Washington, D.C., than in Massachusetts.
Indeed - It actually seemed that Dukakis was guaranteed until the Kennedy's went on record backing Kirk. - Making it clear to many that even in death, that seat is still 'The Kennedy's Seat' - There is a weak GOP injunction based on protocol that Patrick broke to appoint Kirk today. essentially he used a real wide determination of what defines an 'emergency' to seat Kirk, as according to the legislature's votes there was no emergency, meaning that Kirk should be seated in 90 days. - giving him all a a few weeks in place before the future elected Senator will be seated.
The A.G. agrees with Patrick, by stating there is a ton of clerical things that need to be attended to , and letting it all pile up before the official swearing in would cause undue hardship to the new Senator (which may be her , if she wins) and keep the elected senator from his/her duties, denying the will of the voters of the commonwealth.
All I can say is well played Coakley. She managed to find a reason to seat an interim Senator without actually making reference to healthcare, and other votes that Obama wants. But this is why she is A.G - she has a talent for making things stick, regardless of how 'unstickable' they may seem on the surface. Unfortunately, she is now using that talent for evil instead of punishing criminals.
