US flooding: seven killed in Georgia
« on: September 23, 2009, 07:52:11 AM »

Governor Sonny Perdue asked President Barack Obama on Tuesday to declare a state of emergency for Georgia because of the flooding, which a state climatologist said was the worst in 100 years in some parts of Atlanta.

Days of heavy rain swelled the Chattahoochee River to overflowing and in some places turned creeks that trickle through the city's residential neighborhoods into raging torrents at least 15 feet (5 meters) above normal levels. Some places saw as much as 15 inches (38 cm) of rain over three days.

The deaths included a toddler ripped from his mother's arms when their mobile home was swept into a creek and a woman drowned in her vehicle while she was on the phone to emergency services pleading for help, local media reported.  ...

Hope all our Georgia peeps stay safe.

As I was coming into work today, I heard a Fox News radio report that upped the death toll to nine.

I dodged a bullet.   The creek that is 35 feet on the other side of my rear property line filled up quick Monday and water rose to the level of 40 feet INSIDE my property line.  Another day of rain and I would have had water in my house.

FEMA has me on the "lowest risk" of flooding according to their maps, but I'm going to get flood insurance now anyway.

Definitely couldn't hurt.  It doesn't sound good for all those that had loss.  Hope it doesn't rain your way for a good while.

Those creeks and rivers aren't through draining, though.

Fox just had a news clip from Austell, just outside of Atlanta.

The water was way up onto the roof tops of some houses....and the homes weren't in the "flood plain"...so no insurance.

Will be interesting to see how Obama handles this devastation. It wasn't "poor" people whose homes were destroyed.

Maybe there will be some outrage with him like there was on Bush for not rushing down to show his face

True, and about 90% of those that I know really regret voting for the moron.

I think Obama has the biggest case of "buyer's remorse" since Carter.

No, but he better pay attention to the demographics there:

Race                             #               %
White                           138352       33.22%
Black or African American 255689       61.39%

Not the people I work with and or related to they are already planning on how much to give his next campaign. I hope he is only a one term wonder.
