It seems DU is suffering a bit of shizophrenia: for every thread bemoaning the GOP as invincible because of its stranglehold on the MSM there is at least one thread crowing that the GOP is about to turn far right and on into obscurity. Of course, neither of these theories hold true.
The first supposition seeks to excuse Obama and the democrats historical bungling of a near historical electoral mandate, i.e. how can a party elected to positively endorse America's first non-white president on the heels of the most unpopular president since Jimmy Carter sudenly become less popular than Jimmy Carter in less than 8 months. Yes, we do dominate talk radio and FOX but FOX is up against CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC and talk radio is up against WaPo, NYT, LA Times, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, AP, (hem)Reuters et al. Moreover, nobody is ompelled to watch/listen/read anything they don't want to.
The second supposition is based on wishful thinking. It denies this administration's unpopularity and it comforts the story-teller with promises of political vegeance. Yes, the story goes, there is a massive groundswell of populism opposing their agenda but just as soon as it starts raining puppy dogs and gumdrops the American people will forget all about the pricetag and will instead exact a grim electoral scourging upon the conservatives that obviously oppose such schemes for no reason beyond the fact that they hate cute furry animals and candy.
Still, it an interesting phenomenon to watch but the level of cognitive dissonance required to watch these theories develop--not only in absence of foundation in fact--but in contradiction to each other is telling.
QUERY: if the first story is true--that ahandful of rich media moguls can so absolutely captivate the public's consciousness of current events and the interpreation thereof--why would these same monied interests fret what the electorate would suddenly punish "their guys" with political oblivion?
Or, if political oblivion is in the offing why are the dems foundering so pathetically in the first place? The only thing stopping them is public opposition. But how can they oppose lest they know and how can they know lest some sort of media does the informing? Of course the GOP doesn't need an iron fisted grip on the MSM, and obviously they don't, but the fact that a party that has a death grip on congress and the WH is so paralyzed betrays the reality that it probably not the GOP that shall suffer 14 months hence.
It is my theory that the sloth and greed that makes them demand government handouts paid for by other people's money prevents them from dealing objetively with reality. In other words: they want what they want and no amount of truth telling will impede their demands that reality conform to their wishes.
