"The War of Southern Treason" - raised a few eyebrows when calling the Civil War this

But I will always call it that

There were many evils of the Confederates other than torturing and starving Union POWs or fighting to keep slavery, or the serfdom that was Confederate life (it wasn't that much better for most of the Confederate Poor Whites - - but they went and faught for the very force oppressing them. Anything new?)

But just show somebody this picture the next time they anything good about the Confederacy.

Yeah and the north was so noble marching in a line 50 miles wide destroying everything and everyone on their way to the sea.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

For some unknown reason, the primitives are obsessed with the Civil War today.

I wonder if gator from our old home is aware of this.

By the way, the official U.S. Department of State name for that conflict is either "War of the Insurrection" or "War of the Rebellion," I forget which.

145. Your side started it. The South would not quit until our hero Sherman

destroyed your remaining supplies in his glorious march to the sea. I have no sympathy for that region of America. Considering the teabagger marches, Joe Wilson's outburst, and those states being deep red, not much has changed there. The South shall rise again my ass. I'll take shit for this post, but The Civil War is an emotional issue for me.

Somebody just stepped out of a friggin' time machine.

The proper term for it is The War of (unconstitutional) Northern Aggression.

Please explain this when it was the South that fired the first shots?

Sure.  The state of South Carolina had left the union legally.  The US Army occupying Fort Sumpter was a foreign force occupying sovereign South Carolinian soil.  The South Carolina militia was entirely in the right to evict the occupying force with as much force as was necessary.

Nope D6.  As I've shown here before, that land was legally owned by the Federal Government of the United States, sold to it by the State of South Carolina.  That land was not soveriegn South Carolina soil.

Ah, so the only way to define aggression is firing the first shot.  Gotcha.

The south initiated aggression Lug.  It's that simple.  They attacked Federal Military installations legally ceded to the US Government, not just Fort Sumter, but a multitude of forts.  This is no differant that if any country attacked one of our embassies.  They decided that talking was off the table.

Of course you raised a few eyebrows.  You might as well have announced "Hi everyone.  I'm an idiot!"

Oh, and the pick was from Andersonville, Ga . which was a bad camp.  Of course, many historians consider Camp Douglas in Chicago to have been even worse.

The primitives have been amping up this talk of war lately.  They know not what they wish would take place.  If it ever were to take place, the primitives would be dead almost immediately.

Not to mention the Union soldiers occupying that fort had done so by subterfuge.  They had at been at one of the forts on the mainland and had an agreement with South Carolina not to occupy Fort Sumter.  They then did so in the middle of the night.  That put those soldiers in a position to endanger shipping operations.  Yeah, South Carolina fired first, it's called self defense.

If they truely want another Civil war or whatever it will be called, Its not going to split up between North and South. It;ll be East/West coast versus the rest of the country. I hope they have lots of friends because they are going to need them.

So the movement of federal troops from one installation to another within a state that still at that time considered itself part of the Union was an act of aggression?  Well, thanks for letting me know.  I'll make sure that next time I'm ordered to move to a new station I won't.  Don't want to give the State of Illinois grounds to declare war on America.

That move occured a full month before South Carolina announced it's secession, just incase you didn't know.

Andersonville, Andersonville....that's all you ever hear about. You never hear about the many Union camps that were even worse and the treatment southerners got in them that would match or surpass the WW2 Nazi's.

Andersonville was so bad the town folk were throwing blankets and food over the walls to ease the suffering of their enemy.  Can you amagine in to days world Christians so appalled at the conditions of Muslem Terrorists taking their life in their hands to ease their suffering in a state side prison .?

This was War as we Americans at that time had never seen before.  War is inhumane, slash and burn, pillage, rape and murder of the innocents.

Pow's on either side are a drain on the economy of those that have to feed, cloth, house them. The cost to build a holding center, the loss of fighters to guard them, feeding and clothing them also, the Commandants taken from the battle field to baby sit a thousand of the enemy---  It is not cost effective to take POW's and to expect them to be treated with care is ridiculous.  Would any guard who had their entire family wiped out be expected to jolly up and make small talk with the people that killed their family ?

BTW, I have never heard of Camp Douglas in Chicago, thanks for the info, will have to check that out.

The South will never rise again as it never did in the first place.  Just another Dog I have in this debate.

The south fired on Fort Sumter when the North tried to resupply it. Lincoln had been warned not to resupply Fort Sumter. The south was content to wait until the Union troops had to abandon the fort due to lack of supplies. Lincoln forced the issue and started the war much like what FDR did to Japan to get us into WW2.

very very doubtful. There are few areas of America where political belief is overwhelmingly on one side except in the negro ghettos. If civil war comes (BTW the States War was not a civil war as the South was fighting for Independence NOT to replace the Feds in DC) it will be 6 murdering 4 neighbors on a block as the remaining 20 look on in horror.

At this point there is not a State where the population would allow an Ordinance of Secession to be enacted. Nullification Yes, but Secession No.

At Andersonville the worst suffering for Federal POW's came from the simple reality that the South's economy was in collapse. Troops at the front and the Southern homefront were not much better provisioned than the prisoners.
