Senate Votes to Cut Off ACORN Housing Funding

The amendment, offered by Sen. Mike Johanns, passed in a vote of 83 to 7 and prohibits the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now from receiving funds from the current Transportation and Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill. It marks the third time this year Republicans tried to block the organization from federal funding.

The Senate voted to cut off ACORN Housing funds following the release of three videotapes that show employees of the activist group advising a "pimp" and "prostitute" on how to break the law.

Mike Johanns, passed in a vote of 83 to 7 and prohibits the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now from receiving funds from the current Transportation and Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill. My condolences, sir, being represented by Joe McCarthy and a drooling senile old man.

I will give Schmuck Schumer props here--he voted to defund them.  Kirsten Gillibrand didn't.  She has to owe someone a favor.  Word in NY is that the NY GOP is trying to steer Rudy Giuliani towards running against Gillibrand.  Stuff like this makes Senator Giuliani a more likely outcome . . . because if the NY GOP doesn't use this, you can bet that the NRSC will.

Looks the Dems don't take a dump without a plan.

IMHO they will insure that their favorite little Community Organizing Group still gets all them money they are losing in this vote.

They need ACORN to ensure Obama's second term.

U.S. Senate denies funds for poverty group (ACORN)

U.S. Senate denies funds for poverty group

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A poverty-rights group that has drawn the ire of conservatives suffered another setback in Washington on Monday when the U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly to deny it access to federal housing funds.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which helps poor people fight foreclosures and fix tax problems, has received more than $53 million in U.S. funds since 1994, but conservatives' charges of widespread fraud have begun to impact its reputation in the capital.

Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau told the group it did not want its help boosting participation in next year's census.

The Senate measure, which passed 83 to 7 in the Democratic-led chamber, was included in a must-pass spending bill that funds housing and transportation programs for the fiscal year that starts October 1.

"This is an opportunity for the United States Senate to stand up and say 'Enough is enough' just as the Census Bureau did," said Republican Senator Mike Johanns, the measure's sponsor.

*snip*

ACORN said the Senate's action was disappointing but would have little impact on its overall operations.

They're still calling ACORN a poverty group?  Poverty of thought maybe, or morals.

Carl and BlueSaint, Gillibrand is getting hammered at Gradegov.com today.  Big fat F's all around and nasty hate mail, mine included.  (Well, mine's not nasty exactly).  What the hell was she thinking?

I hate turning on the news and finding out some dumb critter of mine has voted for something stupid (McHugh, another one).

However, I also have to give Chuck a grudging attaboy.  He was recently honored by ACORN.  He needs to give the award back.

Perhaps he could throw  it over the fence on Acorn's head office a la John Kerry.

This is getting even better. Beck is playing a fourth tape, from Los Angeles this time.

The ACORN worker, a white woman this time, is actually naming politicians on the tape... Boxer being one, and admits that though they "call themselves non-partisan", they are lobbying for Obamacare. She also used to be a hooker herself, and that her boss is a pole dancer.

It is also alleged that one of them on the tape admits to murdering her ex-husband.......I guess we'll see at 4 PM.

Boehner: The 'Defund ACORN Act' will be introduced today

By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent
09/15/09 12:11 PM EDT
Quote
House Republican leader has just sent a letter to his fellow lawmakers asking them to become co-sponsors of the "Defund ACORN Act," which Republicans plan to introduce in the House today. In the letter, Boehner, citing undercover video reports of ACORN workers encouraging illegal activity, says, "It is evident that ACORN is incapable of using federal funds in a manner that is consistent with the law." Boehner says "immediate action" should be taken to cut off federal funds to the organization. "Simply put, ACORN should not receive another penny of American taxpayers’ money," the letter says.

Here is the entire text of Boehner's "Dear Colleague" letter:

In the wake of new reports of potentially criminal activity involving associates of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), it is time for Congress to take action and terminate all federal funding to ACORN and its affiliates. That is why I will introduce the Defund ACORN Act and encourage you to become a cosponsor.

It is evident that ACORN is incapable of using federal funds in a manner that is consistent with the law. Immediate action is necessary to ensure that no additional tax dollars are directed to ACORN. Simply put, ACORN should not receive another penny of American taxpayers’ money.

Congressional pressure, coupled with the impact of recent media reports, prompted the U.S. Census Bureau on September 11 to end its partnership with ACORN. I support this decision by the Census Bureau, and believe it is vital that all other federal agencies with ties to ACORN follow the Census Bureau’s example by severing all ties to ACORN and its affiliates, whether those ties consist of partnerships or the awarding of federal funds, including federal funds distributed through state and local governments from federal block grants. But rather than wait for the other agencies to act, Congress must take control of this situation and change federal law now.

This is a matter of common sense and respect for taxpayer dollars. Last year, millions of Americans were outraged to learn their tax dollars were being used to subsidize an organization linked to multiple instances of voter registration fraud and other illicit activity. An analysis of federal data by my staff determined that ACORN has received more than $53 million in direct funding from the federal government since 1994, and has likely received substantially more indirectly through states and localities that receive federal block grants.

We can stop this waste of taxpayer dollars by passing the Defund ACORN Act. If you would like to become a cosponsor of this legislation or need additional information, please have your staff contact [my office].

This is different from the amendment that was voted on. This would cut off all funding for ACORN, not just that related to the HUD bill.
