Insurance question

Does homeowners ins. cover replacing terra cotta pipes if they collapse under your basement floor?  What if your sewer is backing up into the basement because of it?

They are 50+ years old and we had a really wet spring.  I can see cracks in the sides from the drain.  I think I will have to get my whole basement ripped up. :bawl:

Do you have a local personal insurance agent that you can call?

I found out the hard way, that calling the company (State Farm) claims line, put the claim on my record...even though I didn't get any money from the insurance company because it was $490...and my deductible was $500. I didn't know the claim was on my record, until I was shopping for new homeowners.  :maddernhell:

I don't know -- unusually wet spring might may be the in you need.   Definitely worth calling on due to the heavy extent of damage.  Stay away from the age of the pipes in the conversation, if the appraiser notices that then whatever, but don't offer it as information.

The reason I am asking on here instead of calling them is that I don't want them to know unless they cover it.

It is outrageous how homeowner's insurance drops you, or significantly raises your premiums based on small claims like this.

I figure it will be several thousand dollars.  Probably about 5k maybe to dig it all up.

We are getting it rigged until we can pay for it next spring.  It will cost me about $200 now to fix a drain for the washer.  I will cap off the floor drain until we can get the whole drainage system fixed.  The other drains in the house seem fine for now but I know for a fact that we have to have the outside ones dug up and replaced.

Call the insurance & start the claim.

If they say it's not covered but still raise your rates, explain to them that you never called and it must of been a prank call.
