Horse with no Name (1000+ posts) Tue Jun-23-09 02:12 PMOriginal message I am having some visceral reactions to that new movie trailers "Bruno" I just don't see how anyone can think it is funny.Of course, all I have seen are the trailers and I just find them offensive.Anyone know anything about this movie?
Arkana (1000+ posts) Tue Jun-23-09 02:13 PMResponse to Original message 1. It's shock humor...like Borat. I think Sacha Baron Cohen is going to get shot or beat the **** up one day--still, I thought Borat was hilarious and I'll probably see Bruno when it comes out on DVD.

YOY (1000+ posts) Tue Jun-23-09 02:28 PMResponse to Reply #2 7. See it. He insults everyone. EVERYONE. And not in a "Perez Hilton" way. In a way that questions the truly ignorant and hateful. No name calling...just playing the part of an ignoramus reporter from Kazakhstan dealing with other ignorami.

derby378 (1000+ posts) Tue Jun-23-09 02:18 PMResponse to Original message 3. Think of it as being not unlike Andy Kaufman's work Sacha Baron Cohen is a performance artist. A darn good comedian, too, but this is what he cut his teeth on back before anyone even heard of Ali G in the States.

Mojo_electro (74 posts) Tue Jun-23-09 02:20 PMResponse to Original message 6. As far as Cohen.... ...in all his forms. Ali G, Borat, Bruno. For me they sometimes make me cringe or are not that funny, but with many interspersed moments of hilarity. I actually enjoyed Borat because of quite a few funny lines throughout that really made me laugh."What up with it, Vanilla face?"They are definitely one-time-use characters. Once one movie comes out, the jig is up and the character would be recognized and the joke would not work. He does a great job calling people out on their stereotypes, and Cohen himself is absolutely brilliant IMHO.
Bicoastal (1000+ posts) Tue Jun-23-09 02:36 PMResponse to Original message 8. I think the general idea is that SB Cohen's humor isn't directed at mocking gays... ...any more than Borat was aimed at lampooning foreigners.I think he's supposed to be making fun of typical American attitudes TOWARDS gays and non-Westerners by embodying these stereotypical views and then some.Of course, some people think it's just mean-spirited humor. I'm on the fence.

I'm not on the fence - I don't care for it because of the shotgun effect - sure, he hits the target, but the spread hits a lot of others as well. The vast majority of his victims are just ordinary people who are trying to be polite and nice to this crazy man.Unless I'm missing the point and all these are REALLY fictional set-ups - not real-life, as they are presented to be. And if they are fictional, then what's the ****ing point?
There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site
