Is this for a Commercial license?  When I got my private pilots license, I had to demonstrate short field landings, S turns, and that I knew how to slip, but I never had to demostrate crosswind landings.

Don't forget soft field. Those are always fun.

he was having a hell of a time keeping the plane under control. Apparently the plane kept wanting to find planes that worked and take their money.

Yes.  It's one of the things we have to be able to demonstrate before the FAA will give any pilot a ticket.  Doing it from "the rough" is usually a problematic proposition, but if you are able to keep the plane alligned with the runway, it has a pucker factor of 0.  Just throw the throttle(s) to the stops and ease back on the yoke.

I don't know whether the requirements have changed, but when I took the check ride for my commercial ticket, I had to demonstrate proficiency in crosswind landings and takeoffs (to 50% of the aircraft stall speed), and then for my CFI, I had to do it again to 75%, from the right seat, with an FAA check pilot aboard.   Once you know the fundamentals, they are no problem.......crab on final to keep the runway centered on your flightpath, kick out the crab and flare with the upwind wing low........the gusts will get you once in a while, but I learned to fly on a taildragger, so you learn to handle crosswinds very early.......

I was going to call BS on this because any passenger,no matter who they are that starts to act up nowdays would probably have been restrained till the LVPD got there and arrested them

Do flight numbers change randomly or are they the same from airport to airport?

Actually, there is a SWA from SD to LV Flight 923 on Fridays.  Dep SAN at 140P, arr LAS at 255P.  That being said, there's no ****ing way a plane got blown off the runway and nobody outside the plane knew it.

As frank says, DUmmies lie.  All the time, DUmmies lie.

Also, having flown into Vegas from both the West and East Coast, the runway lineup most likely used by a SD-LV flight would have been landing into a TAILwind, given how the winds usually blow there and how the plane actually flies to a point about 10 miles north of Jean before making the turn and going on final into McCarran.

That's what happens when you fly Southwest.

I would suggest flying Continental Airlines  :-)

Actually, SWA was a blast flying from LAX or Orange County--as long as you weren't TOO terribly tanked up.

From the East Coast?  Not so much.  They don't take cash for booze anymore from Manchester, and it's usually not anything I like to drink anyway.  Plus, all the airport bars in Manchester have a three drink limit.

It would have made at least a news blurb I am sure

Given the wind speeds that day, there would have been no tailwind.  The winds where out of the south all day.  The best runway to use would have been there NNE-SSW runway.  All traffic should have been coming in from the NNE, to ensure a headwind.  With the winds they had that day, it would have been to dangerous landing from the south.  More then 10kt tail winds are nasty.
