What Songs Are Permanantly Ruined For You?
« on: February 14, 2009, 06:11:26 PM »
I was in the grocery store this afternoon and the piped in radio station started playing "Age Of Aquarius" and all I could see in my head was the scene from the end of the 40 Year Old Virgin.

Another one that is ruined for me is "Carol Of The Bells"

Any song that makes me think of an ex girlfriend or my ex wife. My ex wife and I dated in the late 80's so all the "power ballads" are ruined for me. As is our wedding song, Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton, which was one of my all time favorites. My last girlfriend would send me all kinds of mushy crap and now those songs are also ruined. If I never hear Etta James "At Last", it will be to soon.

I Melt with You by Modern English

I wasn't a huge fan of this song before but I change the channel every time I hear it now because all I can picture in my head is that horrible Taco Bell commercial where everyone has melted cheese hanging out of their mouths. Disgusting.

Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton

OMG! When I saw this thread title that was exactly the song that came to mind for me. I have an ex that ran that song in the ground singing it to me - and he would get all crushed and pissy if I didn't gaze in his eyes as he played it 10 times over I HATE THAT SONG! Even now all these years later when it comes on I want to put my fist through his face. AAGGGGHHHhHHH!!!!!

  What is that one song Chris Isaak got a ton of airplay for?  It's a beautiful song, but it just got played to death.  Maybe I can stand to listen to it in another ten years after I've forgotten about seeing it on MTV a dozen times a day when I was high school.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

I was in Albertson's once.  The piped music started playing The Doors "Crystal Ship".  I had a lot of fun wondering why they were promoting drug use.  I got a letter of apology from their corporate office.  As if I didn't know the lyrics.

Think Jim Morrison:  "Be-fore-you slip into unconsciousness, I'd like to have another Kiss...."

Chris--you're thinking of "Wicked Game".

As far as me:

"Hello" by Lionel Ritchie
"Sister Christian" by Night Ranger
"Turn the Page" by Bob Seger--come to think of it, pretty much ANY Bob Seger sucks.
"Come on Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners
"Tainted Love" by Soft Cell--after hearing some drunk woman slaughter it in a karaoke bar.

"You look wonderful tonight"  an ex who recently died
Although, not ruined, I have very, very fond memories of him...but I'm still not over his death...so I can't listen to this song..... he dedicated it to me one night in an old dive bar and played it on the jukebox.
There are many more songs that remind me of him.....but this one hits home the most.

I love Led Zeppelin but I hope I never hear Stairway to Heaven again. The greatest band ever remembered for the worst song they ever recorded. Tragic.

R.E.M.'s entire album "Automatic for the People" but most especially "Everybody Hurts."

I went on vacation in the UK Jan 2000.  Okay, so we were up in Glasgow at this nice hostel.  There were 5 other girls (plus me and my friend) in this one room.  These two girls that were staying in the bunk bed directly across from me and my friend decided to go out and party it up at a pub and bring back company.  Two of the other girls were sick with the flu.

Okay so everyone minus these two girls are asleep when they come back with the guys they picked up.  The room is dark and when you open the door there was a blinding light from the hall.  One girl and guy leave and the other two get into the bunk bed.  They're on the bottom bunk.  They start going at it, but they're quiet, so I'm just hoping they're done with everything soon and can go back to bed.  One girl starts coughing and you hear the one (I'll refer to her as Skank 1) says to her boy "oh they're waking up" and they stop.

Great!

Until Skank 2 comes back.  They were in the shower, she's only wearing a towel and you can tell her hair's wet.  I remember thinking "Oh god, I hope they did it in there and will just go to sleep."  Of course not.

So they hop up to the top bunk.  Now, these weren't super fancy bunk beds, they were metal, so anytime you moved there was a light squeaking.

Well they start at it.  I can hear her eastern European accent "Oh yes, oh yes."  I reach down and pull my diskman out of my back pack and turn it on just to cover up the sound.  What was I listening to earlier in the day?  REM's "Automatic for the People".  That's one damn quiet album.  I got to "Everybody Hurts" and every time he slowed down or paused in the song I could hear "Oh yes" Squeak! "OH YES!" "SQUEAK!"

Every time I hear that song that night always comes to mind.

I need to start visiting hostels.  Minus the REM album, of course.  :rotf:

Ahh, a couple of eastern European girls getting naughty at night.  LOL

I'm always amazed that no one said anything to them to knock it off.

When we got to Edinburgh and met our roommates there (there were only 3 bunk beds per room plus each room had a bathroom, it was really nice) there were a couple of other Americans in our room and my friend just said "hey, you're not planning on bringing guys back tonight are you?  Cause we're tired."  LOL!  They were as shocked as we were that those girls would have done that.

I agree. Then there is Peter Gabriels "In Your Eyes" right up there with it.

How can we go through this entire thread and no one mention how "Viva Las Vegas" is permanently ruined for everyone by the Viagra commercials?

And, yes, the swiffer commercials have toasted "Baby come back."  I can finally listen to "Anticipation" after it NOT being used by ketchup ads for 10 years or so.

You can't "ruin" a terrible song.  It has to be good to begin with.
