This was my Grandma recipe:  1 1/2 c. sugar
                                         1/4 c. flour
                                         2 c. milk
                                         3 eggs yolks, slightly beaten
                                         1 c. coconut
                                         1 Tbsp. butter
                                         1 tsp. vanilla
1-9in. pie shell, baked and cooled
                                         3 egg whites
                                         1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
                                         3 Tbsp. sugar
                                         1 tsp.vanilla
                                         1/3 c. coconut

In medium sauce pan combine sugar and flour, gradually stir in milk. cook and stir over MEDIUM heat until thickened and bubbly, about 6-8 minutes. Stir one cup of hot mixture into egg yolks, immediately return all mixture to hot mixture in sauce pan and stir 3-4 minutes longer. Remove saucepan from heat and stir in 1 cup coconut, butter and vanilla. Pour into pie shall, set aside. beat egg whites and cream of tartar to form peaks. add sugar a little at a time. add vanilla and beat well. Spread on pie and sprinkle remaining coconut on top. Brown in oven at 350f. 10-15 minutes. chill until set, about 3 hours. Yield: One 9-inch pie
