5 Inmates Eat Poisonous Flower Trying For High (Florida)

Five Manatee County Jail inmates were hospitalized today after ingesting a poisonous flower that causes a "recreational high," authorities said.

The low-security inmates were clearing overgrowth in the 2700 block of Eighth Avenue in Palmetto about 2:30 p.m., Manatee County Department of Public Safety spokesman Larry Leinhauser says in a written statement.

The inmates ate a plant called angel's trumpet, which can cause elevated blood pressure, increased heart rate, agitation and violent behavior, Leinhauser said. In some cases, people who ingest the plant can slip into a coma or die, he said.

The inmates were taken to Manatee hospitals, and their conditions ranged from mild to serious, authorities said.

We have teens always going for the Darwin Awards here with Angels Trumpets, some hit the jackpot and cleanse the gene pool.

Angels Trumpet was such a problem here that they were banned back in the late 80's. You can't buy them from nurseries any more. Luckily though you can buy Trumpet Angels.  ::)

If I were an inmate, I would probably eat poison in search of a high.  Why not?  The worst thing that could happen is you survive and wake up back in prison.

Those related to Morning Glories?  I believe the seeds of MGs contain some kind of powerful (but also IIRC pretty toxic) hallucinogen.

And your medical treatment for your stupidity is covered by the taxpayers.  Isn't that great?

Gee that sounds like a blast :whatever: Isn't the goal of getting high to feel good?

Next time, they need to eat some Destroying Angels, instead. The fungi is much safer... ::)

And the problem with this is.................................... :lmao:
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”
