 California DUers and all

We are legacy owners of Marriott timeshare in Newport Beach, CA. Someone called a couple of days ago and said Real Estate taxes were past due. Husband was napping when his phone rang. When I noticed what was happening he was heading he was getting his CC out of his wallet. He had left his cell phone on an end table so I disconnected call. Later called Orange County and nothing was past due. Once again went over hard and fast rule to never give CC number over the phone. Tax assessment notice came in mail a few days later. Timing is interesting. Also reminded husband government agencies don't call they send letters.

Bragging their timeshare owners in a roundabout way. That's a first for the DUmp. The time share that is

1. The scamster probably knew the timing of the county sending out assessments.

2. If Orange County does like Santa Clara County, the notice of what the payments will be comes out in the summer, but the first one-half payment is due in December, and the second half in April. Unless Randomthought's hubby is losing contact with reality he should have known the timing for a payment demand was off.

3. Two big clues it was a scamster: as Randomthought posted, government agencies don't make phone calls to demand $$$; scamsters always try to create a false sense of urgency/crisis to bypass targets' logical thinking processes.

I know timeshares are seldom a good investment. I did not know that they are or can be a taxable form of real property. For us, timeshares and HOAs are Oh, HELL no's!

Why would any government official call a time share "owner"? In this case Marriott owns the property and would be on the hook for property taxes. The scammers probably got a listing of timeshare owners somehow and were pretending to be from Marriott

I don't know if a timeshare is subject to property tax, but since a mere lease is a form of temporary ownership, I would not be totally surprised if $$-hungry pols decided that a timeshare is a quasi-permanent partial ownership and therefore subject to property taxes. That this is in Orange County and not, e.g., Yuba County may be pertinent. Orange County has MouseLand, Yuba County has rice, walnuts, and almonds.
