Involuntary manslaughter conviction in ‘Grandpa Vicha' trialhttps://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/grandpa-vicha-murder-jury-verdict/4013795/Jurors in San Francisco delivered a mixed verdict Thursday in the trial of a man accused of killing an elderly man in 2021, finding him guilty of involuntary manslaughter but not guilty of murder.
Defendant Antoine Watson was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of 84-year-old Vicha Ratanapakdee. The jury's mixed verdict found Watson not guilty of first- and second-degree murder.
Watson, 24, was also charged with assault and elder abuse. The jury found him guilty of assault but not guilty of elder abuse.

Monthanus Ratanapakdee, the daughter of the victim, discussed the outcome with reporters after court convened for the day.
"Our family is grieving and even disappointed and painful," she said. "But me, as a daughter, I can speak for my father. And I'm going to commit to working for our community for dignity and for public safety in San Francisco."
The verdict seems lenient to me. Maybe the prosecutor did not prove the elements needed for a voluntary manslaughter or second degree murder conviction. The maximum for involuntary manslaughter is 4 years, which, IMO, is pathetic. Since, "Watson has spent five years in custody while waiting for the trial," he could be released based on time served.
At the time, 2021, there was a rash of violence in the SF Bay Area targeting Asian people. The MSM and some activist groups represented the perpetrators as population-wide. In reality, most perps were black, some/many also being Sacred Homeless. Because of those two factors and Lib/Prog inclinations, I do wonder whether the SF prosecutor did less than (s)he might to get a more serious conviction and/or if there was a prejudiced juror.
