I don't think we're being attacked. We have a persistent issue with connections which seems to keep occurring on weekend evenings, but we're not sure why. We're monitoring it, along with our service provider. The temporary fix is to restrict traffic to registered members only overnight, and things are usually back to normal in the morning. But we need to figure out a more permanent solution, obviously.

     My guess would be the massive number of bots trawling the internet to feed AI models. I just didn't know that there are two AIs: one, which is Artificial Intelligence, and the other, which is Asshole Intelligence. Only the latter could be interested in webcrawling DU.

To be serious, message boards have essentially been replaced with instant gratification sites such as X (formerly known as Twitter), Facebook, and Reddit. Amongst others. BFDU also has an excellent point regarding the AI bots. Their spiders are stealing data and scouring the web so that their overlords can claim they possess all information on the planet.

The problem is that spiders and bots are not intuitive and understand nuance and interpret information, other than what it has been programmed to identify.

Personally enjoy the formats that we all enjoy here and at our other former home at CU....hell, even the DUmp has a decent interface (albeit antiquated). I'll be posting here as long as we keep our stock of hamster chow.

The UI here in the Cave is pretty classic, built on a UI that came into use in the late 90s. It's "classic" but very usable, even intuitive. I like that SMF doesn't require a certain order of nesting format tags, e.g. the order in which "Bold", "Italic", "Color", Font "Size" and "Face" occur in nested tags does not matter.

I'm a bit of a UI snob and view DU's UI as dinosaurian, though it's better than some UIs of that type I saw back ca. 1997 and 1998.

I don’t have a lot of social footprint but like you I’ll be at CC as long as I’m allowed. I like it here and the people we have. There are some I’d like to see come back but people have lives. It would be good to know some of them are still breathing though.

I feel like "Bad Gateway" might be an appropriate description for DU. Like, one shouldn't go there, it's a 'gateway' to the silly politics of the left.
