Because we got us. So let’s be clear: we love everybody in our community. It’s not about a trial or a verdict decided in a white supremacist charade, it’s about how we treat our community when corrupt systems are working to devalue their lives. In an abolitionist society, this trial would not be taking place, and our communities would not have to fight and suffer to prove our worth. Instead, we find ourselves, once again, being forced to put our lives and our value in the hands of judges and juries operating in a system that is designed to oppress us, while continuing to face a corrupt and violent police department, which has proven time and again to have no respect for our lives. In our commitment to abolition, we can never believe police, especially the Chicago Police Department (CPD) over Jussie Smollett, a Black man who has been courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom. While policing at-large is an irredeemable institution, CPD is notorious for its long and deep history of corruption, racism, and brutality. From the murders of Fred Hampton and Mark Clark, to the Burge tortures, to the murder of Laquan McDonald and subsequent cover-up, to the hundreds of others killed by Chicago police over the years and the thousands who survived abuse, Chicago police consistently demonstrate that they are among the worst of the worst. Police lie and Chicago police lie especially.https://blacklivesmatter.com/statement-regarding-the-ongoing-trial-of-jussie-smollett/Well, now.......

By defending an obvious hoaxIt just delegitimizes their overall message in my opinion.“WE find ourselves, once again, being forced to put our lives and our value in the hands of judges and juries”.I disagree with this quote, they say WE as if they are speaking for all Black people. Jussie Smollett himself put HIMSELF in the hands of the system for his own personal gain and he got caught.

I mean...the letter actually named a murder by the CPD that happened on camera for all of us to witness. How does that not become the focus of our responses? It's relatively easy for us to view Smollett in a vacuum because we have the privilege to safely gawk and comment on the case. BLM is often on the front lines of these cases, though, and JM is a small part of an entire system BLM fights against. The response does not defend the hoax, but instead, this letter is from a group that marches for the fair treatment of US citizens who are being murdered and discriminated against by the CPD.
janterry (4,355 posts) 11. But they are not seeing Smollett as part of a whole social systemThey are calling him: courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom.I mean. He's a liar. There are many situations I'd give the benefit of the doubt to - or try to see how people managed in very difficult (and sometimes discriminatory) situations. But even if this was one of them, I'd still see him as a liar. They are seeing him as a hero. That can't be smart (politically).
UncleTomsEvilBrother (884 posts) 15. First...Jussie Smollett has been all of those things which they describe...every one of them.Again, (and I will continue to say this), I have seen your posts, and you definitely fight the good fight, but I will never believe the CPD over anybody Black as long as the murder of Laquan rings in my mind, the stories of the Burge tortures ring true, and the murder of Fred Hampton is evident. I will always, always question the CPD when it comes to the issue of Black life, especially a famous one.
janterry (4,355 posts) 6. There is (still) such good will towards BLM, they are ruiningtheir opportunity (imo) to be a part of real, substantive change.
UncleTomsEvilBrother (884 posts) 12. You don't think this is a bit condescending? You think by not taking sides in this JM case would damage the good will you have against an organization that marches and protests for the relevance of Black lives?
Bernardo de La Paz (39,301 posts) 3. Believe black because black and disbelieve blue because blue and disregard facts?Seems like pre-judging all members of groups based on colour because of a few (or even maybe many). So automatically believing black people is better than automatically disbelieving black people?Facts in trials don't matter? I don't know, but it seems that the main testimony so far in the trial has been from the two people hired for the scam and Smollet who seems to have hired them. What colour are those two? Should it matter what colour they are? Should they be believed because they are not police? Should they be disbelieved because a police officer spoke to them some time somewhere and tainted them?Police lie, yes, but the EXACT meaning of that statement is that some police lie (obviously far too many lie too often). However many people take and make statements like that to mean ALL police lie ALL the time. Binary all-or-nothing thinking is just plain stupid and a Doctor should be smart enough to know that and not do it. But is she pandering to her base?Apparently Abdullah thinks we should not believe the police instrumental in convicting the killer who shot up the black church in Charleston, South Carolina?Let him go free because somebody blue testified at his trial?I support BLM because black lives matter. That does not mean I support ALL of BLM or automatically support BLM in every instance.I'm not a robot and shame on Abdullah for thinking she commands an army of robots.
UncleTomsEvilBrother (884 posts) 9. Just a small issue......since you say you support BLM(...and I believe you do). The race/ethnicity/gender of the police doesn't matter. When Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, Castille, [insert a Black body], etc..., I never asked the race of the police officer. The world saw the death who the race of the body lying there.
Star Member marble falls (45,471 posts) 17. Why is CPS so determined to push this prosecution? Whatever he done, he's more than ...... paid for.

In our commitment to abolition, we can never believe police, especially the Chicago Police Department (CPD) over Jussie Smollett, a Black man who has been courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom.
The thing is, we don't need to believe the police, because Smollett's claims are so absurd on the surface.
I'll bet DUpipo knee-jerkingly believed Smollett from Day 1 and persisted until overwhelmed by facts, weeks or months later.
