My own little bouncy..
« on: August 30, 2008, 02:40:56 PM »
So, today my 6 yo asked me who the president of Egypt is.   No lie.  Little Einsteins cartoon was talking about Egypt.   So I tell him.   Then I ask him "do you know who our president is?"  He says "yea,  George Washington".   I said no and told him who George Washington was and who George Bush is.   He said "oh".   Then he said "when is Barack Obama going to be president?"

I told him Obama wants to be president but so does a man named John McCain.  I told him all the grown ups will go and pick who they want to be president.  Whoever they pick will be president in January.  I told him I will pick McCain.   He asked "why?".   I said because I agree with McCain more about what a president should do.  (I know, I know I should have scared the crap out of him by telling him that Obama is evil incarnate).   He said "oh,"  then "can I have some waffles?"

I know it's pretty lame bouncy, but it's a lot harder when you are confined by the truth.   I don't think I converted him and no one jumped out of the bushes.

The really cool thing about the whole conversation is that this little guy was diagnosed with autism when he was 3.   He had 18 months of therapy.  He had words but no real conversation until he was well over 4.   Some times he just amazes me with what he comes up with now.

That's a great story Terry, so much because your son is autistic.  :)

God bless him.  We can only guess how this complicated world looks through their little eyes.

He has come a long way, so much so that it makes me question the diagnosis.

What amazes me is his sponge like memory.   No one in this house or around him has told him that Obama is going to be president.   I think he just picked it up because I do have the news on in the background when I'm working.

Mostly Fox, but I didn't have the Dem convention on and I probably won't have the repub convention on because I just can't stomach all that hype.

I think the little guy still likes Obama because of the cool name.   Luckily he can't vote until 2020, so I got time to convert him.  :-)

edited: Cause it read sort of weird the first time.   :-)

What little knowledge I have of autism leads me to think the kids are just an intelligent, if not more intelligent, than normal...they just don't relate well to other people and/or have perception problems...noises are too loud or lights too bright or textures too rough.  It sounds like your son is overcoming it quite well.  I pray that will continue!

MUI autism is an interface problem, not an intelligence problem.

What I'm finding with Tim is that his issues are all about expressive communication.   His receptive communication could be better than most kids his age.   Because he used to be so quiet, you don't realize how much he is absorbing and learning.

Now he talks but it takes him longer than other kids his age to organize his thoughts and get them out.

He's been discharged from all his therapy and services for almost a year and doing fine.   He's a little delayed socially but very few people pick up on it, kids or adults.

He just surprises me because I remember when he was 3 - 4 wondering  whether he would ever converse.   Now he starts political discussions with me.. :-).

The rapid improvement causes me to wonder if it was/is autism.

Perhaps he is the late talker early thinker type of child (Thomas Sowell wrote a book on this - you probably already knew this)? At any rate, he sounds like he is doing well - even though he is an Obama supporter.  :-) Just kidding, Terry, hoping that this great progress continues for him!

Whatever it was, I know every milestone fills your heart with relief and love.  You and your son's story make for a great legacy of human accomplishment.  To borrow a lyric from The Captain and Toenail, "Love Will Keep Us Together".
