Diogenes’ Middle Finger: Julie Andrews, known mostly for her roles as Maria in the ‘Sound of Music’ and as the beloved ‘Merry Poppins’, along with her daughter wrote an Op-ed column for the network posing as news, CNN, pleading for elected officials to reject Trump’s budget cuts for funding the Arts.

“Decades worth of research attests to the fact that the arts are among the most profoundly important and valuable ways to improve learning and promote success, from early childhood through adulthood . Now, with the shifting priorities of our new presidential administration, artists and arts organizations are at serious risk of losing the support they need to do their invaluable work.”

“The arts are fundamental to our common humanity. Every time we attend the theater, a museum or a concert, we are literally feeding our souls, and investing in and preserving our collective future.”

Ms. Andrews may be correct about the education. But what she fails to see are what the alternatives to Government funding are. And I think there are a few other things she overlooks.

One, for most of the History of Western Civilization, the arts were funded by the ‘Patrons of the Arts’. Leo da Vinci, Mozart, Will Shakespeare, Picasso etc. were not funded by any Government. They were commissioned by Religious Orders and Wealthy Patrons.

Julie's socialist upbringing convinces her that Big Government is the answer to all of our problems.

As a performing musician, I fully understand the value that the arts bring to our culture and our humanity. But that in no way is an endorsement for government and its inevitable corruption to wield its influence.

If people who are involved in "the Arts" had been a lot less aggressive in their attitude towards Trump he might have been a little kinder when it came to budget cuts... just saying.

Whatever. Julie Andrews is a British citizen, as was P. L. Travers (or Australian, though Australian independence was a process starting in the 1930s, when Travers was an adult).

Whether arts or industry, government needs to get out of the game of picking winners and losers (except for products and equipment government buys for government use).

If The Vaccine is deadly as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, millions now living would have died.

If art cannot support itself then is it really art? Many use the funding of the endowment as a way to prop up crap that previous generations would not call art. Now, I know many famous artists were struggling financially and poor (Van Gogh, etc) but people who did recognize their talent assisted them. Let the successful artists or wealthy supporters finance today's struggling artists. If Barbara Streisand likes 'Piss Christ' then let her buy the art work or become the patron of the artist. Some how, I just can't see Barbara displaying 'Piss Christ' in her living room for the enjoyment of guests and visitors.

Celebrities Melt Down Over Trump Budget Cuts

While the stars’ criticism focused on the broad nature of the proposed budget cuts, including deep cuts at the Environmental Protection Agency, the bulk of the criticism appeared to center on the elimination of the arts budgets, which fund public media including PBS and NPR.

Some, including Billy on the Street host Billy Eichner and The Wire creator David Simon, lamented that the elimination of the NEA would cut funding to Sesame Street, though the long-running kids television program was picked up by HBO last year.

Jerry Brown Opposes California Cuts in President Trump’s Budget

California Gov. Jerry Brown’s administration is unhappy with President Donald Trump’s budget proposals and how they will potentially affect several programs and funding for some projects in the state.

President Trump has argued that many of the programs he seeks to slash funding for are ineffective or outdated. He has also noted that some of the programs to be eliminated or cut are repetitive. The National Endowment for the Arts, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowment for the Humanities are among 19 independent agencies being considered for elimination.

Brown’s administration is also concerned about limited grant funding for rail and transit projects. Last month the Federal Transit Administration delayed a decision on whether it would approve a $650 million federal grant meant to convert the Bay Area railway system, Caltrain, from diesel to electric.
