Because it is what they have been running all these years. They are invested in this platform and software architecture -- it would be all but impossible to switch.  They have millions of messages that would have to be reformatted to the new structure (if at all possible) and many of the users have grown to know and like the way it operates.

I prefer it to the nested approach of most BBs.

That is pretty much it, right there.

What really surprised me is that team Skins didn't even take the opportunity to move his site to https:// after DU was hacked. https:// makes use of encryption for each connection, making it far harder for anyone to snoop on the data going back and forth between a users computer and the website. Anyway, it makes it fairly clear to me that even the current version of DU is fairly difficult to maintain and update, even for the designers of the platform. As for FR.. The website is a dinosaur that refuses to die. It really needs to be put down, and a new site launched in its place. However, I'm also sure it is far too late to be able to do any sort of transition to a newer platform. Much of FR is written in PERL - Which is loaded with security issues, and is slow as hell. Moving to a modern language would not only be more secure, the site would run faster, and use a crapton less resources. FR has been running since when, 1996 ? Time for an upgrade guys..

I've been participating in I'net discussion sites for about 20 years, some that look like DU's or FR's (I assume, I've not gone there this century), and some similar to CC or vBulletin or phpBB, or etc.. I loath that dinosaurian DU-FR-style user interface. And the hacker hoards "out there" have, collectively, vastly more talent and creativity than one or three spare-time basement code-spinners at DU or FR!

FR and older sites like it started back in the RYO days, and have a significant investment therein. I get that. But for the sake of usability and looking modern, they really should have transitioned to something more modern 15 or more years ago. Turning the old forum into an archive and starting up the new forum, with a transition time when new threads could not be started on the old forum but "live" threads could be talked out isn't totally painless, but for usability, security, and not looking dinosaurian, it's what they should have done.
If The Vaccine is deadly as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, millions now living would have died.

If jimrob would spend the resources to do a conversion (not a simple matter) instead of.. well, whatever the 400 grand/yr goes to, it would be a huge deal for everyone involved.
one would think since it's his cash cow, he would make the investment. i just dont get it. hell, he's even still hosting it on his own hardware instead of just getting some virtual hosting space. even recovery could be measured in minutes v/s days like it is now. eh well...  who knows.
I mean, I would totally get it if it was a volunteer gig and all the time and expenses were just coming out of his pocket and kindness.
donating money to a site that is unreliable and cantankerous doesn't usually fly well with customers.
