Local California state employees peeved over pay-cut threat

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/state/20080731-9999-...

State employees across San Diego County are stewing over a threat from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to slash their pay to the federal minimum wage of $6.55 an hour if the Legislature fails to pass a budget by today.

About 22,000 temporary, part-time and contract workers also stand to be laid off under the governor's plan.

Many are equally peeved at lawmakers, who rarely pass a budget on time.

Dozens of state employees rallied at Department of Motor Vehicles offices in San Ysidro, Chula Vista, El Cajon and Clairemont yesterday, urging people to contact elected officials and demand that they adopt a spending plan.

“We work hard for all Californians,” said Sherry Gordetsky, who answers phones at the Hillcrest DMV. “I don't see any of the political heads looking to pull down their own wages to get things done.”

The thought of losing his job nagged at temporary employee Gabe Mitchell as he plucked weeds from some landscaping at San Diego State University.

“There's no way, with the way things are and the price of living, I could get by,” he said, sweating beneath a floppy hat. “I'd have to get another job.”

This was apparently before Arnold did it.

1. One thing I dont get by Arnold's threat

California's minimum wage is higher than the Federal level.

($7+, not sure of the exact amount)

If Arnold tried using the Federal miminum, wouldnt he be violating State law?

2. The Terminator does not care about laws!!! But there is hope, the state controller says he is not going to abide by Aunaud's executive order and pay us as usual (state controller is a Dem!).

Hmmmm.  Like Alphonse Capote Gore didn't care about laws in November 2000?

3. It was raised to $8.00 an hour and I too was wondering how he could use the Fed min wage instead of the state since this is a state issue!

I tried to call this morning to his office but you can't get through. I heard he was greeted this a.m. by a lot of protesters! Honestly, the 'big boys' need to get their act together but not at our expense!

5. The state of California is exempt from most of its own labor laws

It comes as no surprise to people who have been paying attention to the state for as long as I have.

(I was also a state employee at one time.)

Well, he's still trying to clean up the great big mess left by his Republican predecessor Grey Davis.

7. Yes he did sign it, but hopefully our Dem state controller will not allow our wages to be cut to minimum wage. Back in the '80s we had a similar crisis they cut our pay a couple of hundred dollars a month, and then when the crisis was over they put the money we lost into our retirement account. But I could not survive on minimum wage one day!

Tough shit, Amy primitive.

These people need real jobs. From the read, it seems to me they have never actually worked a day in their lives.

Bring Section 8 housing payments down to the national average. Cut illegal payouts and the budget would be balanced.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Pretty much.  In California they have duplicated almost every Federal welfare plan, but with no Citizenship requirements. If they would roll those back, the budget not only would be balanced, but there would be a surplus.

As an ex-California State employee, I feel for these folks (the employees, not the DUmmies) -- it really isn't their fault. Arnold should have frozen Lawmakers' wage payments until the budget got passed -- it would have been done in 15 minutes.

If you want to worship an orange pile of garbage with a reckless disregard for everything, get on down to Arbys & try our loaded curly fries.

I'd add find a way to stop the entire state from becoming a sanctuary city for illegals.

They are IMHO at the root of the California $$$$ woes.
