A couple of Mormons just knocked on my door...


They wanted to know if I've heard of Jesus Chri... That's when I interrupted them and asked them if they were Mormons... Which wasn't hard to notice that they were, being that they were both white, clean cut young women, both wearing name tags on their drably colored cardigans and long, unremarkable skirts that went down to their overly-sensible shoes.

One of them asked me what I've heard about Mormons, to which I told them that it all depended on whom I was talking to. I really don't have problems with Mormons, unless they're knocking on my door.... Which they had done. But as a matter of fact, back in Virginia, my next door neighbors were a couple of older Mormon missionaries who were very pleasant people. So no harm, no foul.

But today, I wasn't in any mood to be proselytized to, so I simply told them to get the **** off my property in the most polite way possible.

Sadly, this is probably the most exciting thing that's going to happen to me all day.

I am a male.
When they knocked on my door and asked if I knew Jesus blah blah blah.
I asked them to wait a minute while I go get my husband....
They left pretty quickly.

in elaborate ways, but that's when I was single, without children and had time on my hands. I'd answer the door in really old tighty-whites and act like everything was normal, one time I put on my girlfriend's bikini bottoms... they never stuck around.

Now I just politely ask them if they keep a list of houses not to bother in the future. If they do, I ask them to put me on it. If they don't, I ask them to make some sort of note and to give it to whoever organizes this stuff. Then I ask them to leave.

Most of the time they do, but every once in a while I'll get a persistent God-squadder who tries to engage me. At that point I just tell them to get the **** off of my property and if I see them again I'm letting the dogs out on them and calling the cops.

I have always found this type of stuff to be extremely offensive. Who the hell are you to think that you have the right to go bother others about their religious beliefs or lack thereof? **** off.

The Mormons and the JoHo's make their rounds in my neighborhood from time to time and I've always found them all to be quite pleasant. I know what they are doing, it's their plight, so I can appreciate their conviction and at least be cordial to them like any other decent human. But like you said, that's why we aren't DUmmies

And saying, "No, thank you. I'm, not interested." probably takes you far less time than it took for MrS to type out his silly rant. Mormons and witnesses "proselytize" door-to-door. Big whoop! They also understand how to respond to a polite, "No, thank you." And witnesses, BTW, keep records of every house visited. After a few refusals over a year or two, they don't knock. I would not be surprised if the local Mormon stake does similarly.

As for that bogey-word, "proselytize", religious groups who claim to be Christians all recognize and try to follow a certain command given by Jesus: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all peoples ...". That's reality, and folks like these DU-people aren't going to change it by whining.

Good point! I don't know what unpleasant side of eternity Mormons believe is in store for those who reject Jesus, as they understand him, but whether a professed Christian believes in a literal Hell or annihilation, SDA or JW style, what kind of monsters would not try to warn people and urge them toward a much better eternal state?

Cold-calling, canvassing a neighborhood door-to-door, is more the style of Jehovah's witnesses. Like Skul, I've not heard of young Mormon women serving as missionaries (the little badges, "Elder Smith" ad "Elder Jones" worn by 18YO and 19YO men are amusing; I'm not sure what kind of badges would work if young Mormon women were missionaries). OTOH, all witnesses of more or less all ages who are able are expected to go door-to-door (or work at tables in malls or airports or other facilities that allow it).

I've been out of touch with the witnesses' doings for a long while. If they've stopped with the cold-call door-to-door approach, that's a huge culture change. They've been taught since the 1930s that door-to-door is THE right way for outreach.

There are also several churches in the area that send people around when they are having membership drives or other special occasions.

I haven't seen door-to-door religious visitors in many years.  I usually just say that I'm very busy at the moment, but would be glad to read through their literature later.  I'm not out to discourage or hurt anyone who means no harm.

You have to be some kind of coward to be angry at people coming to preach religion.  Do Dummies feel that threatened by someone elses' ideas?  Dennis Prager taught me a valuable lesson about 15 years ago via listening to his radio show, reading columns, etc.... it changed my view about Christians when I realized what it was they were doing and what it meant to them.  I understand preaching the gospel to be about love and wanting to protect my soul.  I actually appreciate the sentiment and would happily follow any JW or Mormon house to house and put Jewish curses onto anyone who was rude to them lol.
