That's incorrect.  You're registered as unaffiliated, which allows you to choose the ballot of any party.  If you're registered as a dem or rep, you can only vote in your registered party primary.  In other words no registered democrat can vote in the North Carolina republican primary and vice versa.

I'm registered as a Republican in NC and they asked me which ballot I would like.

Her in Illinois, you go in show your voter's registration card, not an ID, to verify you're in the right place. Then you tell them what ballot you want. You can ask for either one.

That is true,but here in rural S. Illinois they just ask which ballot you want.  Of course, I said Republican especially since I was on the ballot as precinct committeeman.  I won in a landslide 99-0, of course I was unopposed. :)
