Learn helpful tips, room by room, on how to modify your home to make it safe and friendly for those living with dementia.

As a caregiver for someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s, you know the challenges well. One such challenge may be adapting your living space to better accommodate your loved one’s changing needs. This month we thought we would look around the house, room by room, and see how it can be modified to make it more dementia friendly. When your home incorporates the elements of dementia friendly design, your loved one’s risk of falling is reduced, his memory is aided, and he has more freedom to use his own abilities. A good design helps your loved one thrive.

Before going through each room, we will first review some elements of good dementia design.

Good Design Elements Include Lighting, and Color and Contrast

Good lighting and contrasting colors are important elements of dementia friendly design. David McNair of the Dementia Centre describes four elements of good lighting1:

5. Yes I am

Lunch out with Marta and our granddaughter. A trip with to Nebraska City for apples, goods, and fall colors. After we drop her off we might go to see "Spector" at the IMAX. Marta had a sinus infection for over a week, so it depends on her still having the energy to go.

Thanks for asking

<<<if were the big guy would put back a spoonful of each item has for lunch, to have it examined by a medical laboratory.  Poor dear Marta might be slipping something into his chow, so as to hasten his terminalization.  She doesn't have all the time in the world, remember, and's tired of waiting.

It's been a full year since the big guy announced he was dying and implying it was imminent. One full year. 12 months. 365 days. Yet here we have the big guy still posting at the dump and begging for some dump love... and not getting any.

Like everything else he has attempted he has screwed this up too.  Only a dummie could hose up dying.   Beats anything I have ever seen.

In all seriousness, the big guy forgot that no one, but no one, knows when it's gonna be over, and the odds are that he's going to outlast some of us.

What a pathetic attention whore.

It's totally ridiculous.

Besides having no class, the big guy has no consideration for the feelings of others.

No one likes seeing someone they love, making an ass of himself.

And so one can easily imagine how poor dear Marta and the kids feel.

But the big guy doesn't care.

I had a complete plan to make sure my house was dementia friendly, but, I forgot where I put it...:(

It's going to take a whole month?  How big of place does this guy have?

He has dementia, dontchaknow. They probably checked the same rooms 20 times each, forgetting they'd already done it.

If I were the big guy, I'd be looking to sell out, and move to one of the three states (VT, OR, WA) that allow self euthanasia.

I believe the laws are actually referred to as "Death with Dignity" laws, but hey, we all know that the big guy long since lost any dignity he had.

I'm starting to think the big guy actually hates his wife, poor dear Marta, because of the agonizingly-slow way he's been dragging out his death throes.

If he really loved her, he'd hurry up and kick the bucket, giving her more time to play the field as a widow looking for a second husband.

This is true.  Marta isn't getting any younger.  The big guy needs to think about what will happen to Marta, or in other words, put someone else first in his life, rather than himself.

Is the Big Guy dying ?
