PORTLAND, Ore. -- Greenpeace activists lowered themselves from the deck of the St. Johns Bridge Wednesday morning in an effort to stall the departure of a Shell Oil vessel headed for Arctic waters. They were joined by as many as 60 "kayaktivists" who hoped to achieve the same by blocking passage on the Willamette River.
Just before 6 p.m. Thursday night, Shell Oil's controversial icebreaker MSV Fennica weaved through nine remaining protesters hanging from the St. Johns Bridge and made its way toward the Pacific Ocean. After winning an early morning game of chicken with the ship, Greenpeace protesters suspended from the bridge and in kayaks and canoes on the river were left disappointed. Thirteen of them had spent the better part of 40 hours in climbers slings and on portable platforms. On Thursday afternoon, after more than six hours of relative quiet, boats manned by Coast Guard officers and Portland-area police officers began circling protesters in kayaks and canoes on the Willamette River below the St. Johns Bridge.
PORTLAND, Ore. -- A judge ruled Greenpeace USA to be in contempt and issued sanctions of $2,500 an hour as the protest blocking a Shell ship continued.Shell and Greenpeace USA appeared at an emergency hearing in federal court in Alaska on Thursday morning to determine if protesters dangling from a bridge in Portland violated a court injunction.Attorneys for Shell filed an emergency motion claiming that Greenpeace should be fined for violating the court's order.
An Intelligence Bureau report on foreign-funded NGOs “negatively impacting economic development†in India has called Greenpeace “a threat to national economic securityâ€, citing activities ranging from protests against nuclear and coal plants and funding of “sympathetic†research, to allegedly helping out an Aam Aadmi Party candidate in the recent Lok Sabha elections. The allegations are part of the IB’s report, dated June 3, submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office. As reported first by The Indian Express, the IB claims the negative impact of the NGOs’ role on GDP growth to be “2-3 per cent per annumâ€.
