Price of hamburger on AMTRAK $9 each.
Cost of hamburger on AMTRAK $16 each.

Any bets on the cost of labor on AMTRAK?

Plus where the hell do you pay $4.62 (I like the .02 cents adder, makes it look sciency) and not the $2.50 I pay in  one of the most expensive leftist cities in the country?

Of course a Big Mac costs relatively less in Australia.

They don't have to ship the kangaroo meat so far.

I like how they ignore the higher taxes paid by those in Australia.  When all is said and done, those minimum wage workers there have about the same or less purchasing power as minimum wage workers in the US.

Ignoring buying power and tax burdens is pretty common in pop-comparisons of different countries' wages and prices.

Minimum wage pay also goes much further in red areas than in blue areas in the US.

IDK but recently a friend asked me to stop at a McDonald's for him and buy a double quarter pounder EVM because he was unable to go himself. The total came to $7 and change.  :o

I remember at one time being able to pay with a fiver and getting change back.   :old:

For WI:
Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese - Meal      $7.13

That was about right. I think it might even be higher in Milwaukee.

Look DUmmies....its real simple....if you want to get paid $16 AUS an hour (approx $12.35 US) then move to bloody Australia. Quit trying to force companies already barely scraping by to taken on an even more unsustainable financial burden.

Good point! Buying power varies considerably within the US. One of the reasons I knew nads' statement that San Diego has the second highest housing cost in CA is that I knew SF and San Jose - an hour's drive apart - are the highest among CA's large cities. A small town in KS, like Marysville, is far, far, lower.

Actually there is a good chance that a Big Mac goes down in price if there is a higher minimum wage. It will also be better tasting, have a ZERO percent chance of spit, body hair, or other human debris, and be more consistent. McDonalds will automate.

500 to 600 pound feedlot stock is now bringing over $2 a pound on the hoof at the auction barn. The only bright side at the moment is the cost of corn per bushel is down a good bit.

I know BlueJazz has a picture, but I don't believe what the picture depicts is true. There has to be more to the story that will show that it isn't true or there is something about the comparison that is neither direct or honest.

Off the top of my head, I can think of three possibilities and a certainty:
1. The number of employees in the Aussie McD's (who may be hard working youths) may be less than in the American McD's (who may be lazy bums with a sense of entitlement). Fewer employees = lower cost per sammich.
2. Other operating costs may be lower in the Australian McD's. Lower overhead = lower cost per sammich.
3. The Big Mac is a loss leader at the Aussie McD's, but not at the US McD's.
4. The DUmmy is lying.

Apples and oranges comparison with all the important details deliberately left out.

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/08/the-magical-world-where-mcdonalds-pays-15-an-hour-its-australia/278313/

To start, some Australians actually make less than the adult minimum wage. The country allows lower pay for teenagers, and the labor deal McDonald's struck with its employees currently pays 16-year-olds roughly US$8 an hour, not altogether different from what they'd make in the states. In an email, Greg Bamber, a professor at Australia's Monash University who has studied labor relations in the country's fast food industry, told me that as a result, McDonald's relies heavily on young workers in Australia. It's a specific quirk of the country's wage system. But it goes to show that even in generally high-pay countries, restaurants try to save on labor where they can.

News that local sales at the world’s largest fast food chain, McDonald’s, are falling due to high levels of youth unemployment and increased competition should be taken with a grain of salt as the chain’s heavy discounting strategy begins to hit bottom line results, retail experts say.

This week McDonald’s global chief executive and president, Don Thompson, told US investors that lower levels of customer spending in Australia and cut-throat competition had reduced revenue for the company. He would not comment on specific numbers.

Hi5. Very true. It will be cheaper for McDonalds to hire one mechanical engineer to run an automated store and keep things moving than it would be to hire an entire store full of people at that point. These idiots are doing like the unions and pricing themselves out of work.

H-5 for smoking out the most important flaw in the "comparison"! Just before looking in on this thread I went over to HackTheMenu and found that the generic price of a Big Mac in the US is $3.99. Where the $4.62 number came from I can't say, but the simple fact that the last digit isn't a "5", "8", or "9" all but guarantees that it's bogus. Marketing guru-oid life forms in the US have a fascination with prices ending in those digits, e.g., 3.95 or 3.98 or 3.99. apparently a lot of people see $3.99, but their brains perceive $3. I've trained my brain to round up when I see one of those digits at the end of a price.

That'd be a great starter hob for a mechanical engineer straight outf college or in his or her senior year.

So poverty is cured then, right?

Now that people get a "living wage" the need for welfare has evaporated, I'm sure.
