In the South, such systems as evaporation cooling do not work because the air itself is heavy with water, and that water itself is so warm, it contributes to the heat, and fans even cease to work.

You are hot, and if it gets too hot, even subsuming in water doesn't help, because it is hot, too - or there is a lack of unspoiled water to do so.

You just boil. Unless you can devise a refrigerant system that works under extreme humidity and extreme heat, you will not survive.

This is my challenge.

You possess no generated electricity.

What do you do in the deep South high humidity climate?

And this is, indeed, a challenge.

Why, it's very simple. Change your incandescent light bulbs to those spiral things and just from that alone, the entire planet will instantly cool down by 50°.

10. We lived in my mother's house in central Florida...
 
It was an old, old Spanish-style bungalow. Never had AC, didn't need it. It had high ceilings, and all the exterior walls were super thick. I think stone covered in stucco. The stone basically stored the cooler night air temps and kept the place reasonably comfortable. Plus, it was situated under huge shade trees. The minimal/no clothing thing helped a lot, too.

Answers to this are easy.


1) You lose 20 pounds and suffer a heat stroke in the heat and humidity

2) You buy a Honda portable generator and plug a damn window mounted AC into it and stay cool like normal people.



Sorry I'm not buying his "high ceilings and shade trees". BS

I've had to use the A/C in December in Tampa.  There's no way in hell you're surviving with out A/C much less electricity in Central Florida in the summer time.


That would be like trying to do the same thing in South Texas in July.

No electricity huh.....Move down by the river, throw a pipe in the deepest part of the river(coldest water), use hand pump to pump water through stolen large truck radiator, have slave wave fan behind radiator to force cool air out other side, get caught and spend summer in air conditioned jail.

This is why much of the South was a swampy wasteland until 60 or 70 years ago.

It's also why civilization has made relatively few inroads in tropical countries.

There is no substitution for air conditioning, all the myths about shade and open windows notwithstanding.

Apparently he did, in the past.

For years, I'd operated under the quite reasonable assumption that Atman had never suffered in his life, but then his tale of woe about the belongings of his wife and him being sold at a storage-unit auction, they losing things of great sentimental value to them, compelled me to re-adjust my impression of him.

It's true Atman's never known poverty, but he has known at least a little bit of financial desperation, which kind of, sort of, made franksolich more sympathetic towards him.

I just want to clarify that this DUmmie appears to be wondering how you just lounge around in the deep south with no electricity. Despite the fact that no DUmmie will follow my advice I'm going to issue it anyway.

First, you get a job that requires physical labor. Then you spend the day working said job. The job results in two things. The first is money that can be saved to purchase electricity. The second is you becoming extremely hot, sweaty, and tired. At the end of the day, once you stop working you will actually feel cooler.

During the summer, the place where I work is in the high 90's at least. I get home and my wife has the AC cranked and I have to put a sweatshirt on after taking a shower.

I'm never sure about this "high ceiling" thing.

This place has ceilings so high one has to use a step-ladder to change the light-bulbs in the ceiling lights.

It has no air-conditioning, because it's so old and leaks like a sieve as it is.

(But hey, the rent's cheap, and there are "extras" to it.)

It gets hotter than Hades in here during the summer.

1.  Dig a hole, a deep one.  Must be at least 10-20 feet deep.  The deeper you dig, the cooler it will be.
2.  Jump into hole.
3.  Have someone fill in the hole.
4.  Enjoy a cool, constant 55-60 degrees year around.
