As far as I'm concerned, fighting for the US in Iraq is equivalent to fighting for the Confederacy.
There is wide range of personal motivations that people had for doing so, and there may be some room for stories of "heroic self-sacrifice", but there is no denying that the cause was rotten to the bone. Celebrations of heroism of the Confederacy will always be problematic and, especially when they ignore the other side and the broader context, bordering on racist. Iraq is the same

1. I'm no fan of the Iraq war but Saddam hardly strikes me as being analogous to Lincoln's Union. nt

3. You don't wage war against a person. You wage war against a group of people.

In the case of the Iraq war, it was the people of Iraq who were attacked. They might as well have been "Lincoln's Union", in so far as they were simply a group of people minding their own business.

Germany vs. Poland would serve as an analogy just as well, but the American civil war is something more people can relate to I suppose.

9. More like fighting for Nazi Germany in World War II, but "rotten to the bone" pretty

accurately describes the legitimacy (or lack thereof) of the U.S. cause.

ETA: At least some of the German soldiers, sailors and airmen could argue they were conscripted into service on behalf of their evil cause. U.S. servicepeople, by contrast, can only argue a 'poverty draft' compelled them to enlist, rather weaker sauce, imo. Lyndie England (she of Abu Ghraib notoriety) said she only enlisted b/c the only place hiring within a 60-mile radius of her home was WalMart.

10. That's a fringe extremist viewpoint

Meaning that not even the fringe believes in that kind of nonsense. Actually, it's just trash.

Soldiers have fought with valor and distinction for causes just and unjust, in wars necessary and pointless, since time immemorial, the justice of the cause or rectitude of the war has nothing to do with the heroism of the men fighting.

Back to where they were at the start of the war.

When the Surge proved a success they didn't want to appear in campaign ads dissing the troops.

Now that Obama has squandered US lives by conceding Iraq to ISIS they're desperate to once again claim it was an immoral war.

There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site

Another primitive just went on franksolich's list, for attacking one of the very few primitives with any honesty and integrity.

Sadaam was definitely patriotic when he murdered 90,000 Kurds with nerve gas.  Definitely a modern-day Lincoln mixed with Washington and Ben Franklin.

The fact that Iraqis are free and we've rebuilt their cities and towns better than they were before the war and that women don't have to be raped by Saddam, his sons and all their entourage and risk death aren't important. Nor does it matter that ISIS has retaken land we helped them take back from terrorists (granted they weren't as brutal as ISIS) because 0bama pulled out too soon. He probably went flaccid and had no choice.

I find analogies of this sort more persuasive when they are analogous.

Nice.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.
