Maybe recall the 2002 ceremony in which Denzel Washington and Halle Berry won Best Actor and Best Actress, or even just last year when '12 Years a Slave' swept the Oscars (Including Lupita Nyong'o winning Best Supporting Actress)?

Honestly, who cares ?

All of the big awards shows are people within the industry the show honors collectively patting themselves on the back. I'm just not interested in watching a celebrity circle jerk.

I will or used to occasionally go to a movie because it was nominated.  Now it is considerably cheaper to wait for DVD or pay-per-view.  Not to mention, more convenient.

I'm interested in the Oscars for the opposite reason: I love movies, and am interested to see if any that I really liked were nominated for/ win anything.
I'd agree that watching a movie based purely on its performance at awards shows is pretty shallow.

Watching movie trailers on TV throughout the year, you can always pick some that will be nominated, just by their lefty views or subject. That's true for the Hollywood movies, but Indie movies rarely get widespread exposure until they are nominated.

I'm not a movie goer, I watch "on-demand" via FIOS. My daughter told me recently movie houses are trying to draw people back by up-grading the theatres, like leather recliners.

Yeah, there are some that are making their theaters more upscale in that regard and other ways.
Personally, though, I'm not fond of it, because making the seats too comfortable increases the likelihood that I'll end up falling asleep, even during movies that I like.
