California bans coyote hunts that offer prizes

hunting contests that have sparked a culture clash between wildlife advocates and ranchers who offer cash and other prizes to marksmen who killed the most animals.

It was the first ban of its kind in the nation, according to Camilla Fox, executive director of Project Coyote, which petitioned the state to end the popular contests that occur almost every month in California or nearby states.

The vote by the state Fish and Game Commission allows hunters to shoot as many of the predators as they wish year-round but stops the awarding of prizes.

Coyotes eat ptarmigans. Coyotes are a real problem. Animal rights and radical environmentalist are dangerous as they commit most terrorist acts in America, more than Jihadists and KKK combined.

Not surprised.  There sure are some strange people in CA.

I don't imagine not getting a "prize" will deter many.  While coyotes make good target practice, shooting is a pretty inefficient way to control numbers.  Unless you happen to see one working his way into your calving ground.

Trapping (toe hold traps) and snaring is more efficient and profitable.  Selling to fur buyers is enough of an incentive.  Makes a nice little second income.  Probably can't do either of those in heavily populated areas where people let Fido run loose for exercise.

Even cats hate and want to eat ptarmigans, so the same rule should apply.
