City of Houston demands pastors turn over sermons

The city of Houston has issued subpoenas demanding a group of pastors turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality, gender identity or Annise Parker, the city’s first openly lesbian mayor. And those ministers who fail to comply could be held in contempt of court.

“The city’s subpoena of sermons and other pastoral communications is both needless and unprecedented,” Alliance Defending Freedom attorney Christina Holcomb said in a statement. “The city council and its attorneys are engaging in an inquisition designed to stifle any critique of its actions.”

The subpoenas are just the latest twist in an ongoing saga over the Houston’s new non-discrimination ordinance. The law, among other things, would allow men to use the ladies room and vice versa.  The city council approved the law in June.

The Houston Chronicle reported opponents of the ordinance launched a petition drive that generated more than 50,000 signatures – far more than the 17,269 needed to put a referendum on the ballot.

However, the city threw out the petition in August over alleged irregularities.

Among those slapped with a subpoena is Steve Riggle, the senior pastor of Grace Community Church. He was ordered to produce all speeches and sermons related to Mayor Annise Parker, homosexuality and gender identity.

The mega-church pastor was also ordered to hand over “all communications with members of your congregation” regarding the non-discrimination law.

This is an incredible read. Liberal have abandoned any pretense of democracy in Houston: Rule by edict, punish all perceived enemies. Does anyone think Hillary will be different from this lesbian mayor?

What would happen if a states Attorney General did this in a red state after dems spoke at black churches?

This crap pisses me off because it seems like they always target white Christian churches, but the ones with black pastors get a pass.  We've seen candidates give speeches in churches, how is that anything different than a pastor speaking about social issues? Especially when those "social" issues are also deeply held moral issues?

Any attorney can send out a subpoena, asking for all sorts of protected or exempt information, nobody gets sent to jail for refusing unless and until the attorney asking for it then goes to a judge, gets the judge to back up the suboena, and the person who was the target still refuses the judge's order.  This demand is some seriously wrong bullshit and the pastors need to fight it.

Everyone should take a good long look at this because sooner or later the movers of the gay agenda will be bringing this to you. For those who said that it didn't matter if gays got married, that it didn't hurt married heterosexuals... they are about to find out how wrong they were. The LGTXYZ movement will not allow any dissension. You are not allowed to tolerate homosexual practices, you must endorse and embrace all they choose to do. The actions going on in Houston are not the first salvo in this cultural/moral war that is being waged for the soul of this country, it is just the latest example of all those things we were told not to be worried about. No slippery slope we were told and a whole lot of people bought in to that lie.

Interesting events in Houston today

There has been an outpouring of outrage over the subpoenas issued by the city of Houston to several local pastors for sermons and private communications with their churches. Late today, the city decided to plead incompetence, ignorance, illiteracy, or a combination of all three, according to the Houston Chronicle:

Amid outrage from religious groups, Mayor Annise Parker and City Attorney David Feldman on Wednesday appeared to back off a subpoena request for the sermons of certain ministers opposed to the city’s equal rights ordinance, with Parker calling it overly broad.

The subpoenas, handed down to five pastors and religious leaders last month, came to light this week when attorneys for the group of pastors filed a motion to quash the request. Though Feldman stood behind the subpoena in an interview Tuesday, he and Parker said during the Mayor’s weekly press conference Wednesday that the wording was problematic.

Feldman is monitoring the case, he said, but had not seen the subpoena written by outside counsel working pro-bono for the city until this week. Parker said she also did not know about the request until this week.

Texas AG to Houston: Rescind Subpoenas Issued to Pastors
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is demanding that Houston city officials withdraw the subpoenas they issued to five local pastors.

The City of Houston demanded that the pastors turn over sermons and correspondence with parishioners which discuss sexuality, gender identity and openly gay Houston Mayor Annise Parker.

The subpoena is part of an ongoing controversy in Houston, where some are opposed to a law which allows men who identify as women to use the ladies bathroom, and vice versa. Opponents of the bill filed a lawsuit, so the city issued subpoenas.


Now, Abbott is calling the subpoenas a direct assault on religious liberty and is demanding that they are rescinded.

“Looks like the mayor got her hand caught in the religious liberty cookie jar,” Todd Starnes said tonight on “The Kelly File.”
