 Omaha Steve (42,614 posts)

Whenever I hook up a new audio component it means getting very hot, sweaty, and upset...

Our old receiver was less than two years old and died under the extended warranty. The last 10 days I have been dreading hooking the system back together because it is always a pain, well you know where.

The insurance company called last night to say they were authorizing a replacement. So this morning was do the online research. Compare models, brands, features, prices, etc. We selected what we wanted. Called and placed the order.

It was lunch time. Went to a mom and pop place we go to only every couple of months because it is out of the way.

Went and picked up the receiver. Went to the grocery store and bumped into our middle daughter there. Postponed taking my granddaughter to see Dolphin Tale II until Tuesday to allow time to hook up the unit tonight.

Got home and relaxed for an hour or so before trying to tackle the hard hard part of the day, hooking up the receiver and all those darn wires.

The space behind the TV is just enough to be hard on my back. There was lots of dust that had accumulated over the last two years since we got back there to clean. One good thing is the A/C vent blows right down on that area.

Marta came over to help. Considering all the trouble this would have been for me from past experience, with Marta helping this was pretty easy. Moved the TV table out from the wall. The receiver is at the open end. So four hands to connect all the speaker wires.

After 10 days of sound from the TV it was so good to get the first channel working. We finished up in great time. Everything is hooked up and working except the two speakers that sit behind us. We will get that Sunday. I work a short shift tomorrow and then off to the NU game down in Lincoln tomorrow night.

Ran the vacuum. Moved the stand back. Started in on the set up. Got the wi-fi working. Got our favorite XM stations set. Picked the sound options we wanted.

We put in a couple movies just to listen to.

With Marta's help this went so much easier than I expected. We replaced the modular TV lamp a month ago or so. Unless something dies unexpectedly, we shouldn't have to do anything like this again.

And yes we bought another extended warranty.

Steve is a naturally sweaty guy, I'd hate to see what he considers "very sweaty".

The big guy simply isn't very bright.

He's like a male version of Pam Dawson, dumb as an ox and desperate for envy from the DUmp.

Like Pam, he makes up stories about the luxuries he enjoys that most DUmpmonkeys can only dream of.

His OP is a Dawsonesque masterpiece.

In one comical essay, he brags about 1) owning a high-end audio receiver attached to 2) a two-year-old widescreen TV that attaches to 3) Wi-Fi and receives his expensive 4) satellite radio subscription. And in case you were wondering, he can afford an expensive 5) extended warranty.

Along the way, he courts DUmp approval by mentioning he got the receiver from his local mom-and-pop audio store (as if such a place actually exists). Maybe mom and pop own the local Best Buy.

Then, to re-emphasize that he rolls at a level of affluence beyond Dummy dreams, he mentions having tickets to the Miami-Nebraska game tomorrow night.

(I've never been in Nebraska's stadium, but at Ohio State the seats are 18 inches wide. How would the big sweaty guy and Marta fit into two of those?)

Maybe they got seats on a bench in the nose bleed section, up near pigeon heaven. Makes sense to me, big fat sweaty Steve can catch a breeze, but the poor fans downwind get the benefit of finding out what happens to someone's sweat pores after 10 years of fishing condoms and whatnot from the sewers of Omaha.

The seats at Memorial Stadium are the same. Sitting next to Steve Dawes would be like sharing a roller coaster with Jabba the Hutt - for 4 hours.

Okay -

Wiring up a stereo receiver/amp isn't hard at all - but that is a subjective thing. With that being said - OS should have used the same technique I use on changing spark plugs and wires. Do it one wire at a time. In this case, move the first wire from the old tuner to the corresponding spot on the new tuner. Repeat until they are all moved.

I suspect OS just tore them all out at once instead.

It's no wonder that Steve struggles with this issue.  Steve and his fellow primates lack the fine motor control that we humans possess.  It comes natural for Steve to just grab a chunk of wires and pull them all out as it does for us to be able to tie shoes or unscrew a soda bottle lid.

It is likely that Steve's motor controls are somewhat improved above that of a typical primate, due to his years of practice fishing out condoms for  Omaha public works using a net.  Extensive honing of his practically nonexistent skill has allowed him to live a relatively peaceful cohabitational existence with a human (Marta).  Even an unsharpened pencil can transfer some marks on to a sheet of paper, if you persevere and rub hard enough.

Sadly for Steve, in the same way that his big, stupid, hairy body defies his true nature as a primate of some kind, so do the glimpses like this wire tugging episode shed light on his lack of fine motor control.  Steve can't really help being Steve.

All the components he described are HDMI and/or optical.  It isn't like old days with RCA or Component Video cables.

I imagine due to Steve's size that he bumps into a lot of things while out and about.

I also bet he scratches himself like a bear on the end caps at stores.

Then he is just an idiot.

I figured he was using the TV's RCA out/in to feed to/from the audio. Its how I have everything connected through my (admittedly older) but still perfectly serviceable SONY stack of audio stuff. (The components connect to the TV via HDMI, then the analog converted audio is fed out to a SONY STR D350Z ((5 channel, 130W/channel @ 4ohms. .09% THD.))

But that's just me. Every year I keep my circa 1996 stuff stereo stuff alive is one more year I don't have to fork out cash for new stuff. (miskie=tightwad)

The good old day's in the 70's and very early 80's during the receiver wars.  They were honest about output measurements, by using continuous output power vs. today's deceiving peak power measurement.

I would take my 70lb honest 162w/channel Sansui 9090dB or McIntosh MC225 set or the 80lb Pioneer SX-1980 at an incredible 270w/channel over any crap made today.

One would think that with OS being the big pro union guy that he is ,He would have gone to someone he knew that works on the loading docks to help him score a deal someplace.

I still have a Kenwood I bought in the 70's? Not very hard to hook up a new if this one ever breaks? Of course I change out HVAC circuit boards without breaking a sweat. The hapless, helplessness of these people amazes me.
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

Hell, her new boyfriend could work at the big hog farm south of Plattsmouth, and still smell better than Steve.

True, but does Marta's shinny new Mr. Stud have the political skill-set to place 9th in an election with 8 open seats?
