I've been hospitalized three times for being suicidal.

It's been 11 years since the last time.

I apologize to you all for not being as active in this forum as I once was. I actually created this forum so that makes my lapse a little worse. I don't have as much time as I used to for DU in general, but when I've been here I should have been in this forum more often. It's my job to help keep it afloat.

I've had a happy existence, or at the very least a much less painful one, for a long time now. My worst symptom was psychosis which was at the root of my depression. Psychosis is the most painful state of mind a human can be in, but, ironically, the fact that that was the source of most of my pain actually saved me. Because, you see, the drugs they have developed to treat psychosis are very effective. I was mostly healed after the first two doses of the anti-psychotic medication that I now take daily. I've had no symptoms for 11 years.

Unfortunately, for many people who suffer depression, the drugs don't work and the therapy isn't helpful. There will be times when they are seemingly happy and productive, maybe long periods of time, only to slide back down into the pit of despair that is depression. What is also unfortunate about this is that most people cannot relate to it. They have no idea about how terrible you have to feel to want to die. So, for many, there is no treatment available and there is no way they can make anyone around them understand what they are going through. I think that is where Robin Williams found himself.

I'm not sure of the exact statistic, but it seems like I heard today on one of the talk shows that something like 30% of people who suffer from clinical depression do not respond to treatment. In my mind, that has got to be one of the most pressing issues facing psychiatry and psychology today.

1. Of course I'm glad you were part of the 70% that were treatable, my dear Tobin!

We need more research on therapies and medications that can help the approximately one third that we cannot currently reach. It IS a very pressing issue, indeed.

SO GLAD you're OK!

2. and that's just those who go into treatment.

THAT is a really tough nut to crack, but i think the aca is going to make a major difference. when people can go to the er without the fear of going broke, that will make a difference for millions.

you were very lucky. the trial and error of psyche meds can really wear a person down. it took me half dozen ad's over the years to find one that works for me. hopefully science will sharpen this process.

daughter could really use some meds, but has given up after trials when she was still a teen, and in a seriously complex place.

people, keep trying. keep looking. keep hope.

3. Some doctors think if you are depressed, then you must be addicted to something.

They have groups for people with addictions to drugs or alcohol, but depressed people often have no groups to go to if they are depressed and don't have an addiction. I am referring to a friend of mine who was depressed due to their unemployment situation, and had no addictions. The county mental hospital gave them ONE HOUR A WEEK of recreational therapy, which usually consisted of playing Pictionary with the other patients.

Anybody can play Pictionary outside the mental hospital, without spending taxpayers' money.

5. Psychosis is also at the root of my self-harm

No point in getting into what all that entails other than to say behaviors that use pain to reinforce a sense of connection to reality. For me pain is an icon of reality. Yes, well, I am mentally disordered...

But all that induces post event self-judgements which are, well, overwhelmingly depressing. My personal experience is anti-depressants seems to do nothing for negative self-judgements which were largely correct. You can't fix what isn't broke, even when that thing, negative self-assessment, sucks out all hope.

The pharmaceutical industry has products to sell. And they do. The anti-depressants work for some people, and I'm glad those people get relief.

And you were still issued a CDL?

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

If you go back through the DUmp nuthatch archives you see that DUmmy HereSinceNumbers is maybe crazier than Tobin S.

My EXACT first thought.

Liberal thinking is a two-legged stool and magical thinking is one of the legs, the other is a combination of self-loating and misanthropy.  To understand it, you would have to be able to sit on that stool while juggling two elephants, an anvil and a fragmentation grenade, sans pin.
