He was a whiz at the slide rule as this was before the calculator came into being.  Difficult to teach some very good hands on kids that just could not get the math.   
So he had these kids come to the house AND teach them the math.     Navy housing    interesting, My neighbor was talking to a another neighbor I did not know.

I introduced my self and this new neighbor and as she had seen all the young students coming into my home told me in no uncertain terms,

 Her Husband had just gotten his chiefs hat and could not associate with the enlisted.

What fun to point out that my husband  was his instructor at the school and we associated with everyone.  One of the best belly laughs I had in years.   -----I wonder if this could have been Nads, I would love to know.

I can read the words but I can make no sense out of it.

Your husband taught Nadins husband how to do what exactly?
