Because Movies!- Burf!
« on: December 11, 2013, 08:46:33 AM »
This is in the debunking Propaganda section of the dump. Burf, here, takes issue with the movie Catching Fire, the second in the Hunger Games series.

Catching Fire
Last edited Wed Dec 4, 2013, 03:25 PM - Edit history (1)

...it seems to me before the Right-wing has a chance to co-opt it as their own idea, as they typically do, that we ought to take a deep look at the meaning of the Hunger Games Films so far. How much more does the allegorical totalitarianism you see in these films emulate extremist right wing- politics, than it could ever be lied about in the reverse. This film is what is popular after all, populism is a crazy powerful force, and the ' righties' love that. Lets take ownership of exactly how this film series depicts exactly how the right wingers are concurrently dominating political, and social discussion with lies, and how it an appeals to despair and fear in the context they would have it believed. Truth is, we see the lies, we see the desperate audacity they would have everyone swallow in the name of fear and conformity regarding their fragile worldview.

This film is about, US, The left, the progressives.... the ones who oppose the Right Wing status-quo that dominates the entire REAL world as we know it. The thing they fear is their "conservative" Staus-Quo doctrines ever being falsified by Our Paradigm Shifting defiance and dedication to a real world narrative that exposes, vindicates, and represents a true form of democracy and liberty that everyone can instinctively support without any doubt. The constitution of our great nation was never their idea, it was ours, it is OURS and as long as they deny it; They unwittingly deny their own rights as much they deny ours . They, by invoking the names our founders, and who's perverse interpretation of what freedom and liberty truly mean, will be the ones who have the absolute most to lose. We cannot force our ideas like they would hope to do to us, but we must aggressively demonstrate we are willing to take real world meaningful action to advance our ideas so that they might finally see what we see........ real world, meaningful, human, PROGRESS!

To DUmmies, screwing anybody and anything is..... freedom.

Catching AIDS or something worse and having to deal with the consequences of your actions on your own is....oppression.

Having to work for food, shelter, healthcare, Etc, is.....oppression.

Having all your worldly wants and needs provided for free is .....freedom.

The Hunger Games is what a left wing socialist Utopia would be. There is nothing right wing about it at all. A very elite section (WDC) and the rest are dirt poor. What socialism always burfs out.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Liberal thinking is a two-legged stool and magical thinking is one of the legs, the other is a combination of self-loating and misanthropy.  To understand it, you would have to be able to sit on that stool while juggling two elephants, an anvil and a fragmentation grenade, sans pin.

Conservativism is about limiting government (i.e. the opposite of the The Hunger Games), it is one reason we are so adamant about gun rights, we know that when the people have no way of defending themselves the government can oppress them easily.

DUmmies, if you can find one example of how the government portrayed in the Hunger Games portrays conservative values, other than that is is "Authoritative," since we both point the finger the other way there, I will be very surprised.

Here is my list of why it is liberal:
-Federal Government has the ultimate control
-The government is full of the urban elite, and the minority urban districts control the majority rural districts
-The districts are like massive USSR collectives with each dedicated to one item to produce
-Hunting is illegal
-People receive food rations (tell me, who on DU was pushing the other day for everybody to receive food stamps?)

I could go on, but there is my starter list, I look forward to seeing your examples of why it is Right Wing

Oh, they do.

Google "Hunger Games a socialist metaphor" and see the stupidity of the Left on display. They equate the outer villages as a "product of Capitalism" IE: the people are just making products for the evil capitalists, the "elite" seen in the cities, and the "Game" represents the wonderful workers rising up against the evil rich, think 99% against the 1%.

What I saw was Government run amok and oppressing the entire "country". Progressives see the exact opposite.

I thought the "Hunger Games" audience was exclusively girls, ages 13-16.

Young Audience
« Reply #8 on: December 12, 2013, 09:29:57 AM »
The Hunger Games series IS for a young audience.  The message, however, is pretty clear.  It is anti-big government in a major way.  I think the movie (and the books) resonate on several levels.  I'm particularly thrilled to see this sort of message making into the main stream and appealing to the next generation in such a big way.

Just a hint, new kid. We don't normally change the titles in our posts.
As to the movie, yes, I agree with your assessment. It will be interesting to watch the next one. I thought the books were well done- written in a simple style aimed at younger readers but with deeper meanings running throughout the series. I would almost say the 'Brave New World' or '1984' for our time... but hat would be pretentious.

True. However the DUmmies/Progs/Liberals, as seen in the Google search, see it in a 180 degree "spin". It's very telling about the Liberal "mind".

I wouldn't say that they're oblivious to that little fact.

They just want to be the ones in charge.

***Spoiler below for those that have not read the books or watched the movies****

Honestly I see katniss as more of a right wing hero for a few simple reasons. She lives under total government rule. Her family is given just enough to keep them alive (reminds me of a friends stories about living in Cuba) and they are forced to perform for the elites in the capital that never seem to work any kind of job, with a few exceptions (IE the store owner that helps them in Mockingjay) and they have everything handed to them. They take the capital by force to end oppressive big government. The peacekeepers are the strong arm of the government and use force to keep the people in line as well as censorship of anything that would be construed as ideas opposing those in power. Sounds more like a progressive gov to me.
